Weather and Winter

Well, I'm so looking forward to running without this horrendous wind. It just never seems to stop, but I guess it's good for strengthening and being determined not to let it beat me - I'm a bit of a perfectionist and don't like things to beat me, I decide when I'm done not the weather.

So, just wondered is there a best time of the day to run ?? I have to run in the evening after work, so it's about 6pm during the week but do go in the day at a weekend. Not really looking forward to when the clocks go back and running in the dark, but needs must. I've got all the reflective stuff and lights for my arm and ankle - do I need a head torch I wonder ?? I'll only be running on lit roads !!

The wind is really tricky, especially when combined with rain. Well done for getting out anyway. As for best time of day-that’s a really personal choice. It’s what works for you and your lifestyle. We’ve got some super early birds here ( ToothPickJafah sticks out in my memory) but for me, it’s really variable. Often the no man’s land of 4pm is my start time which I don’t really like but it’s when there’s a gap in the schedule.

I’d always wear a head torch running at night, but I think that’s probably personal choice too and how well the roads are lit around your whole route. You don’t want to be unexpectedly hit wit a dark patch.

Good luck!

Whether or not you need a torch depends on how well lit the areas are that you're running in. I've got a chest torch instead of a head torch. It's great - lights up the area in front of my feet without me having to constantly look down. Saves me blinding someone if I look at them. And it had a red light on the back so I feel a bit safer as cars will see me more easily (I am wearing hi-vis reflective clothing too.) So it would be worth getting ome.

As to time of day - I think that's personal preference really. I prefer running in the morning but often need to go later. In the summer I can go out earlier before work but in the winter it can be too icy and waiting until later in the day can mean the pavements are more likely to be clear. Wait too long and it's all freezing up again... So it really depends on your route and the local conditions as to whether there's a best time of the day.
