… and your RUNNING is good for your SMILE!

Good morning fellow runners!

Here I am and I know that even though the forum has been very, ( oddly), quiet over the last week or so, that many of you have found time to run and to get the runs ticked off on the way to the Graduation Podium! It has been very warm !!!

And... I am back out there and I am running again, albeit very slowly!

As a result... I am a lot more smiley than of late! The weeks since Mr OF's heart attack have been challenging at times, with ups and downs and a few really trying moments! So, it is with a sense if relief that I pop the coffee on, put out the blackberry smoothies, freshly picked by myself and Mr OF), and a lovely selection of tasty and some healthy snacks...

So, grab your cushion... and your snack and settle down to share.

Because I am smiling... I thought of a post I wrote a couple of years ago and thought... yes, that is still the case. ! Smiling is good for us! Even in my lowest points over the last weeks, if I have thought of something that has made me smile... it really has helped!

It is true. It really is. So.... here goes...

I have started C25K again... and like a comfy old cardigan, I have slipped it on and am wearing it as a I move forward, slow and steady. Because I have done C25K and repeated bits or all many times, I do have time to think... and I was thinking of all the times I have heard, the advice to smile when I run!

Smile, when I am running. Smile, because weirdly it relaxes your face!

Now, I, like many, many of us, have days when I have to be honest, I did not feel much like smiling, but, sensible old snail that I am, I do as I am told. I did smile! After the run, I got to thinking and I started to do a little bit of research … ( you know what I am like)! What I found out was so interesting!

We all know how great the C25K programme is, and we all know how thrilled we are when we Graduate...we are running safely, we are running steadily , we are running strong, but are we running happy?

We should be because;

1) Physical exercise, running included, is known to release endorphins in the brain. Endorphins act as a natural ( err), drug, that make a person more energetic, more awake and, da da dah.... happier.

2) Running benefits us physically, which, in turn, makes us feel stronger and better able to handle life generally. Being in better shape, changes us, not only physically, but mentally, also. It makes us feel more in control and able to cope with confidence.

3) Running allows us to set goals. C25K sets the goal for us, but after Graduation, we choose our goals. Many folk are happier when they are working towards a goal, whether they actually achieve it or not. The act of setting a goal and actively working towards it is what seems to trigger happiness. Although sometimes, especially when we begin running, it is hard not to focus TOO much on the goal, and we may forget to enjoy the lead up to it.

Reaching the goal, is brilliant , but it is, apparently, the journey towards the goal that leads to the most happiness.

4) The happiness within ours and any other running community is a very social thing, despite the fact that we run as an individual. Look how supportive we are here and on all our running forums!. Running with friends or running with other runners virtually, gives us a wonderful feeling of belonging!

5) Running, when we accept and acknowledge it, improves our self-esteem. Now, increased self-esteem makes us happier. A happy runner is one who knows exactly how awesome they are. Don't you?

NOW, as if that was not enough reasons to be happy when running, there is more!

A study published in Psychology and Exercise, found that runners who smiled used less oxygen, ran more economically and had a lower perceived rate of exertion than those who frowned ! Blimey!

Tightening your jaw means everything is tense... relax it and smile and hey presto, running easy, running well, running happy!

According to the research, it can be a false smile...but a genuine smile apparently happens , even if it starts false!

Well !

I think that everything I have read, would make me want to start running. If I hadn't already started!

I do know that running makes me very happy. I do feel better physically and mentally and I do know that it makes me feel confident and more able to handle certain aspects of my life! But now I know that it is all based on scientific fact, by golly... !

So, food for thought here and we want to know how you are running. How is it going for you right now? Are you able to run happy? If you start out feeling a tad grumpy, stressed or just very, very low... does the run make you feel better?

So please, sit a while and do share what has been happening because this is a great place for advice, tips and just sharing!

Looking forward to all your replies.

Oldfloss x

🍏I love her too Old Floss & she definitely gave me a smile as did this post. Thank you for all your research. So interesting!! Well I can really testify that it works. I was in so much face pain yesterday that I decided I would go for a run after lunch to distract myself from the pain. 10mins into the run as I started to run relaxed, and happy to be out there, the endorphins started kicking in and the pain disappeared & stayed away for much of the day. It was like a miracle! I slept well too an added bonus!

Oh goodness... that pain must be horrid and how super that the act of the run relaxed you and you had a better day than you thought... More smiles, less pain... wouldn't that be wonderful!

Laura for me just ahs the voice that makes me feel safe and supported... all the you can do this... and stay strong cues. They really keep me going....

Thank you for popping in... sit a while... your cushion is cosy and always here for you x

That is so true  Oldfloss . Coach Bennett also advocates smiling to relax while running. It also reminds me of c25k when Jo Whiley suggests that if you are find a run tough one day, just keep saying to yourself (or out loud) “I love running “ over and over again. It really works as you start to believe it.

Glad to hear of improvements with Mr OF and yourself. Keep running, keep smiling.

I had forgotten this tip,- I need to reinstate my “I am strong, I love running” mantra!! I have had too many “Not sure if I can - oh I did, that’s surprising” runs recently!

Hi Oldfloss and running friends, hope you’re all getting out there and enjoying enjoying the last of the summer!

As some of you will know, I suffered a heart attack and cardiac arrest in April, which was followed by a number of weeks in hospital, the first 4 of them in a coma. Thanks to the NHS I’m now out and running again, following 8 weeks of cardiac rehab organised by the local hospital. Once I’d been assessed properly, I was allowed to restart C25K which gave me a big mental boost. I finished week 7 of C25K at Parkrun yesterday, running continuously for 25 minutes then walking the rest.

I’ve now decided to retire from work as I’m 60 and I’ve had enough of it after 44 years. I’ve applied to help out with the cardiac rehab sessions as a British Heart Foundation volunteer, just to give something back. Once I’m running fully again, I might apply to be a coach at my running club. They’re always looking out for coaches to run at a ‘slower’ pace and I’m happy with that!

Life has taken an unexpected turn for me, but I’m determined to make the best of it. Running will form part of that, I’m sure.

Happy running, everyone!

Hello! So good when I see you here in the corner x You have made the right choice, I feel!

You won't regret it... quite the opposite and GO YOU! Volunteering for BHF! Brilliant, David. I think when the time is right you will be a great coach.... maybe the BHF could include a C25K group for heart attack recovery???

Each finishing line is a new starting line and maybe not the way you would have wished it...but maybe pointing you to something that is going to enrich your life even more? Long may this continue and I cannot wait to see where this takes you... Meantime... just rest up here a while... good to be with friends x

As always, thank you for an interesting post OF. 😄

I always smile to people I run past,(good old NE community friendliness), but hadn’t really thought about the impact on my running! - But yes, you are right- I always feel cheered by those moments of “smile & chirrup” for quite a time after they have happened. -Gonna smile to the ponies, birds hedgerows etc too now!! 😂😂

Hello... good to see you on your cushion... Those cheery moments, can carry us through can't they... there is so much doom and gloom, that sharing a smile with another runner or just someone we pass can be really uplifting...

We never know what folk are struggling with and if they don't smile back... I think maybe it will have lifted them a little?

I love the idea of smiling at all the critters too! I said hello to the sheep on my Welsh runs every time... they didn't answer...but then... 'ewe' wouldn't' expect them too... ! :) Stay and chill a while ... and thanks for popping in!

What a lovely post old floss and so true ! I was told as a child “You should always give a smile away - nobody needs it more than those who have none of their own “x we too recently had a scarecrow competition my fave was postman Pat and a little Jess cat at his feet - so cute ! Next it will be Guy Fawkes before we know it x people ( non runners that is) can sometimes look at you strangely if u run with a smile on your face I presume they think running is not enjoyable and I should be grimacing instead !

It is true.... hello... thank you for calling in today.... and that saying is so right... I love the scarecrow competitions, they had one near us here but I missed it! Oh gosh... Bonfire night ... and the year moves on!

I just smile anyway.. I figure that I look weird enough anyway, but it really does not concern me at all :) Loopy old snail... maybe that would make them smile too :)

This is a post Oldfloss that the late great Tim (IannodaTruffe) would have been so happy with, remember at the end of a reply to especially new runners his slogan motto was "keep running, keep smiling" your post says it all, I think you have seen a few photos of me at parkrun, on most of them I have at least got a bit of a smile on my face, especially at the camera as I pass, sometimes a wave as well, certainly it's better to smile than frown while running., I am glad that Mr Oldfloss is keeping well.

Oldfloss profile image
OldflossAdministratorGraduate in reply to AlMorr

He would indeed... and he commented on it the first time around... Tim often runs with me... :)

Your photos usually do show a little smile and you are so happy to ne there doing what you do too! Long may your runs and your smiles continuer, my friend x

Thank you for popping in...it is so good to see you here and thank you... Mr OF is feeling a lot stronger each day and is more confident too. We are getting there together.

👍 ✔️PS, I was at Drumpellier Parkrun on Saturday, on their Facebook page there are 310 photos, I am at number 275 and number 276, at number 274 there is a photo of Lorraine, the lady who I paced two weeks ago at my first 10K event race.

How amazing is that! I made a conscious decision way back in my training weeks before graduating to smile when running. It definitely helps with breathing wierdly enough, I did the long slower breaths to a count of 2 strides at first advised by Jo Wiley. But when I started smiling, somehow the breathing became far easier! Also smiling makes me feel so much better especially if I am not feeling particularly happy. It's certainly a great tip to share Floss! X

Oldfloss profile image
OldflossAdministratorGraduate in reply to Cassie_7

YYEAY!! Happy smiling runners.... that is just perfect... the breathing can be so tricksy but when we relax... and when we smile clearly, it all just happens... like all the time:)

I was trying to follow Laura's advice in on 4 out on 4 ..just to see how it worked for me. but thinking about it puts me off... so I just breathe the way I do... comfortably pace and easy...

I think this tip might make a few folk who see us running, feel happier too... see a smile and pass it on ? :)

Cassie_7 profile image
Cassie_7Graduate in reply to Oldfloss

Yes exactly. I found having to think about my breathing was annoying, but I guess the technique helps for some people. Keep smiling !! 😀

Good post Old Floss, glad to see you are feeling better and getting out there again.

I have developed a taste for listening to podcasts when I run, and as they can be quite funny, I do actually quite a lot of smiling, and I have even laughed out loud occasionally, which does tend to surprise anyone I meet at that time!

But I also enjoy smiling at other people I meet whilst out, which often draws an answering smile back, especially if I sing out ‘good morning’ at the same time!
