ankle pain on first consolidation run

Feeling down. I headed out this morning for my first consolidation run (after 2 days rest), planned to go for just 30 mins like I have already completed in week 9. I went steadily and slowly holding myself back but at around 25 mins I started to feel a twinge on the inside of my ankle. I stopped and stretched and it felt ok. Walked home and stretched fully, then iced it straight away. I can feel it is a bit sore still when I walk. I will try and make a physio appointment and no more running until I take further advice.  Has anyone experienced a similar problem? I’ve had several issues over the years but this is first time I’ve had pain on inner ankle.

I have. Towards the end of C25K I was feeling little deep warning signs but carried on running. On my graduation day the discomfort turned to dull and then sharp pain. The same evening the foot started to swell up, tender painful skin and reddish strip. The end result was two months off running, physio treatments and the repeat of C25K.

The reason why it happened (in my case) was inadequate shoes and lack of support for my flat feet. The shoes WERE good, but they were not good for me. After the inflammation was treated I visited a gait specialist who picked my new shoes (way cheaper that my first pair) and they also prepared custom made insoles and fitted them in. Since then, no injuries (that was back in 2016). I had other discomforts in my feet but they were the result of marathon and later ultra marathon training, and that was due to all the work I was putting in by running up to 320km per month (and that's a different story 😀).

Check it out with your doctor but you also must figure our what caused it. If you don't, it'll come back before long. Good luck!

Thanks mrrun . Definitely going to consult my physio for a full assessment. So frustrated as I thought I was doing all the right things with warm up, cool down, stretching, strengthening and resting. I can feel it now even when I’m walking. Going to keep on with regular icing until I can make an appointment.

My walking was quite affected afterwards during the ‘pain period’. It was all to do with the pressure I was putting on my left knee that channeled it through to my right ankle. Body mechanics became my point of interest afterwards. 😀 But the starting point was the hips that were out of balance and the shoes that did not do much to support the entire body structure. After that I took stretching very seriously, but also the choice of my running shoes (that l alternate depending on running distances) as well as my walking trainers. Once bitten twice shy, l guess. 😉 The good thing is, now, at 59, l feel better, more balanced and physically stronger than ever so something along those lines clearly works.
