I think I completed my W8R3 today more out of anger than anything else.
My husband has recently returned from 3 months in Spain where he walks miles upon miles and hashes at weekends. He also helps set the hash course during the week). He can run a few minutes, but mostly walks.
I couldn't run for 60 seconds when he left in August and today was extolling the virtues of C25K and that I was so proud that I could now run for 28 minutes and would be running 30 minutes next week and graduate next Saturday. Then came my fall after my pride.....he uttered the words "yes, but, it's not quite the same is it? you use a treadmill!!!". Am I cheating? I'm just not ready to get outside yet.
This is not a "poor me" post. I still feel absolutely elated at my achievement and am excited and looking forward to next week โบ

Thankyou. I know it will be different running outside and will be prepared for that. I just know that if I go out now and don't do as well as I have been doing I'll feels like a failure (one of my traits) and will give up.....something I am not prepared to do particularly now with only 3 runs to go. Once I graduate I can build up outside.
I tried to run outside towards the end of c25k because my treadmill broke but it didnโt go well so since then Iโve stuck to my treadmill. I did try one other time after I graduated but I couldnโt get my speed or breathing right. Iโm quite happy running on my treadmill and am gradually increasing my time and speed. Donโt let him burst your bubble youโre right to feel very proud of yourself ๐๐ป๐๐ป๐๐ป
How rotten of him!!! Spoiling your excitement..I think you've done amazing ๐๐๐You can run for 30 mins that's something to be proud of ๐
I started on the treadmill and eventually got outside, sure it's different and will take you a little time to adjust..but just keep on with what you want to do till you're ready..
Thankyou. I don't think it was said out of spite, just a thoughtless comment. I am mighty proud of what I have achieved over the past 7 weeks. No one can take that away from me ๐
Hello fellow treadmill runner. Dont let anyone take your amazing achievement away from you. For various reasons I've done all my running on a treadmill and so what, your off the couch and it still counts. Well done. Good luck for week 9.
Thank-you. And when I do venture outside, I'll still have my trusted treadmill, as a backup. I've "run" in some amazing places watching virtual runs on you tube!๐
What a cheeky chappy! Runningโs running ๐๐โโ๏ธ. Best of luck with your last week, then you can decide whether or not to take it outside (itโs brill btw ๐).
Thankyou. I plan to try outside once I graduate. I can't risk anything getting in my way yet as I will feel like failure. Not a good feeling. I want to graduate on a high.....and so I shall, on my treadmill ๐
I could never have done what you have achieved. My boredom threshold is far too low and I need the stimuli of being outdoors to get the joy of running.
I truly admire those, like you, who run on a treadmill.
I don't understand it, but I do admire your dedication and let's face it, running is running, wherever you do it. The health benefits are broadly the same, indoors or outdoors.
Stick with the mill up to graduation, then take a few gentle exploratory runs outside. I am sure you will love it, once you get used to it.
Thankyou. I have a plan and as you say, I'm sticking to what I know for now. I have a trait that dictates ( however much I want to change it) that if something I do doesn't go according to plan or doesn't quite live up to my expectations, then I've failed and will quit, pure and simple. After graduating, weather permitting, I will pluck up courage and get out there. Our park land, donated to our town by Henry 8th is beautiful and I've walked around it many many times. Next time I'll (jog) run ๐โโ๏ธ it ๐๐
Back at the start of 2015, I did the whole of C25K on a treadmill in our works gym. And many here have done the same. I find it sad and frustrating that a piece of equipment tool used by PROFESSIONAL ATHLETES and runners of all abilities all over the world, is derided and called into question by... well, I'll leave that to you to finish.
Since then, I've continued to use treadmills for about 30% of my runs. They are an INCREDIBLY useful tool for the committed runner and are often a saving grace for those beginners who maybe don't feel confident enough (for all sorts of reasons) to start outside, or simply can't run outside due to where they live.
Thankyou for your reply. ๐ ๐ฑ I don't think he's that brave just brave in front of me ๐. I will be clicking on the links you have provided and read later, bed time reading!
Had I known some of the information you gave I probably wouldn't have felt so gutted by his comment. We live and learn. But be sure, I will not be giving up ๐โโ๏ธ๐โโ๏ธ
Cheek! As all the replies are saying a run is a run no matter where you do it! You're off the couch, getting exercise and getting healthy. Keep on running Jane and good luck for next week, the final week... before GRADUATION!!!๐๐
Hi Bill, thankyou. And whilst my run was in anger, boy, was it good. The time flew by, it was my best pace yet (still slow though) and suddenly Denise said "you have 1 minute left" ๐ I punched the air (as you do ๐). Graduation week, here I come ๐โโ๏ธ๐โโ๏ธ๐โโ๏ธGood luck on your next run. ๐๐๐
I think you are right to stick to what is working when you are so close to the final celebration,! ๐ even with my sore heel I donโt want to start messing about with different shoes or changing my routine of rest days unnecessarily before graduation. I noted you said about running in all sorts of โvirtualโ environments, i think that sounds amazing and Iโm sure you are getting all the stimulation you need at present. As for hubbyโs comment, mine often tells me not to overdo it when I tell him Iโm running the next morning, I just ignore him, I donโt need any kind of negativity in my fitness drive, I have the evidence to prove itโs working and nothing anyone says can change that for me. I have proved it to myself that I can do it and am so glad I started on this journey ๐
Hi Headspace1st, his comment has now been stored in my memory bank and unfortunately it will stay there forever. However, it will never deter me from completing my journey, in fact it's just made me even more determined. And when I do get outside after I graduate ๐, I'll make him eat his words with his grovelling apology ๐๐
No you are absolutely not cheating Janec1956! Many people here only use a treadmill for their C25K and a lot only ever run indoors! Running is running, wherever you do it! So you carry on feeling elated at what youโve achieved so far and enjoy the rest of your C25K journey!
Thankyou Oldgirlruns. I'm more than happy with my achievement and will most definitely be carrying on. This is my journey and no one can take it away from me ๐โโ๏ธ๐โโ๏ธ๐โโ๏ธ๐
Personally I agree with IannodaTruffe - I've never run on a treadmill, and admire those who do.
What's a hash course though? I've only been running for 18 months, and have never heard the term. Should also add that I've lived in France for the past 15 years, so my exposure to everyday spoken English (as opposed to TV or radio English) is very limited.
A hash as it is known was set up by walkers/runners many years ago and groups can be found, literally, all over the world. They call themselves "drinking clubs with a running problem" and they all have a hash monica and are rarely known by their given name.Basically, a hare (a member of the group) sets a course, easy, hard or extra hard that can cover up to 10 or more kilometres through any kind of terrain. Flour or chalk is used to enable the group to follow the trail but there will be many trails that are false. They have a couple of drink stops on route. At the end of the trail the group will form a circle, the MC will chat and give commentary on the run, they have all sorts of funny/weird ritualls but they all have a good time. After the run, they will often go to a taverna / restaurant for a meal/drink that they call an "on on". Sounds mad....it is, but can be great fun. ๐
I was very much the same going outdoors from the treadmill. I did the while C25K indoors. Only when completed and consolidated dud I venture out. I used the same coaching from C25K for the run, chose a flat route on paving. It was fine. All I would say is avoid hills and trails until you have done a couple of runs. You can do this.
I graduated last week and did all my runs on a treadmill. I also worried whether I was good as a โnormalโ runner, but then decided yes actually I am and Iโm far fitter than I was 2 months ago. I can now run for 30 mins when I couldnโt even do it for 1 ten weeks ago. He should be congratulating you on your progress
How mean of him! Sounds like itโs coming from a place of jealousy to me. Keep doing what youโre doing, I personally find it harder running on the treadmill. Although I find running incredibly difficult altogether and havenโt managed more than a few minutes at a time outside or on a treadmill. Youโre doing amazingly! How much do you want to bet heโll start secretly looking into C25K for next time heโs away!
well done you!! I think I got to around your stage before I was brave enough to venture outside but I still go back to the treadmill quite a bit - just think back to week 1 when 60 seconds felt impossible and look at you now - you should be so proud!!
Well done to you and congratulations. Donโt let anyone tell you this is not a great achievement, because it is. Just ignore any negative or throw away comments from family members, run your way and keep checking in on the forum for oodles of positivity๐
Well done you and enjoy your graduation next week. Don't feel you have to try outside, but I love it (the breeze, birdsong, rain, mud๐๐คฃ). It is sometimes tricky due to terrain and you may find you need to go even slower, especially this time of year, to cope with hidden roots, slippy leaves and wobbly paving slabs..... but that's all part of the fun. And I think your next goal might be, not thinking you are a failure every time you don't succeed ..... you've tried, done your best and that's not failure in my book, just not quite there yet๐คฆโโ๏ธ๐คฃ๐คฃxx
I completed the c25k on a treadmill and am extremely proud of my achievement, you should be proud too. I now run mainly outdoors and really enjoy it. If you decide to start to run outdoors there is definitely a transition period, the main one that I found was speed control. The fact that the treadmill runs at a constant speed cannot be replicated outdoors and I found myself going too fast and burning out early, once I'd got a handle on that I really started to enjoy it (seeing the distance you run increase in 30mins really gives you a boost). So stick at it, enjoy it and remember, this is your achievement, no one else's.
Cheek of him! Ask him how he thinks that is a supportive or helpful comment?? As others have said running is running wherever it is. I'm quite enviouyhaving never used a treadmill, is it supposed to be easier then? I thought I might join a gym this winter to avoid running in cold icy conditions. I fell in June, tripping over a tree root, and don't want to do it again by slipping on wet leaves etc. Well done you, you are so nearly there.
Hi, look don't worry, I started outside and I feel weird when people look at me. So I went in the treadmill and actually it's easier because you are not facing the elements and let's face it you don't have to have to think about which way your going. So saves time and energy, I can still run outside, but inside in the winter seems fair to me ๐. Take it in your stride and make it yours, you will feel great .
