Did my first Parkrun on Saturday. The plan was to go nice and slow. Unfortunately a competitive streak manifested and I did it two minutes faster than I've ever managed before. Felt very pleased with myself.....but....
I'd had a niggling ache in my ankle the day before and by mid afternoon could barely flex my foot. Googled it and was advised rest, elevation etc so spent the rest of the day on the couch with paracetamol. Could barely walk that evening to collect my curry from a restaurant a couple of hundred yards away!
Yesterday was a bit better, and this morning it's almost back to normal. I've realised my calf muscles are very stiff so wil do lots of gentle stretches today and hopefully a very gentle run tomorrow. It hasn't put me off Parkrun but I'll definitely take it easier next time.
PS is there any truth in the idea that new trainers can prevent ankle pain? 😁 Please? 😂😂😱

Congratulations on your first Park run. I will be doing my first one next Saturday so i will take your points on board. What a nightmare struggling to get your curry 😂😂 Hope you enjoyed it. Yay
Well done on your first parkrun. It can certainly draw out the competitive streak in most of us which inevitably leads to pushing harder and increasing injury risk.
Running in old shoes that have not been fitted after a gait analysis is just taking pot luck as to whether they provide you with appropriate support. They may well be the cause of your issues.
If you haven’t had a gait analysis already, I would recommend you go to a specialist running shop and get fitted with a good pair of running shoes. It is recommended during c25k, once you start extending your running to 20 minutes. The importance of running shoes is similar to the tyres on your car, and the most important part of your running kit.
Many of us have suffered by getting carried away on our first parkrun, but we live and learn. My first time volunteering at parkrun came after an over ambitious run and a short time in the IC 🤣. I’m glad you enjoyed it and wish you many more. Warning - it is totally addictive.
