Advise on mild shin splints please

I've never been a runner, but decided this is the best way to get back in shape. I just completed week 2. I've had shin splints when I run. The first week was getting worse so I changed shoes and now it's not worse or better. I'm wondering if you more experienced people recommend changing shoes again or just waiting for my body to adjust to running? Thanks

You mentioned changing shoes , are you wearing proper running shoes ?

And are you running on road/tarmac or grass ?

A softer surface can help

Welcome to the forum TarenT This post is a must read for those new to the programme or are returning after a break. It includes stretching after a run and hydration, all of which will help.

Enjoy the journey

I also suffered at the start and now don't have any problems. But I did several things to help: 1) extra time between runs, not going out until the tenderness from the last run had gone, 2) putting icepacks on them when I got home if it was bad, 3) finding exercises to help online, and 4) running on a softer surface rather than tarmac. It takes a while for the body to adapt but it's important not to make it a longer-term problem by doing too much while they adapt. I'm still not doing long runs (no more than 30 mins), but tarmac is fine for me now. Make sure you have proper running shoes though, as this will cushion the impact as you land.

All very good advice above. A combination of all those things has really helped me. I’ve also found that shortening my stride length and making a conscious effort to run slightly more slowly has worked wonders. Best wishes - shin splints can be awful
