Depends on the weather and the length of the run, if you run a 5K in a temperature of 10C or below you don't need to drink any at all although you should have before you run, however, if you intend to run over 10K and its a hot day, drink plenty of water to avoid dehydration and take water with you.

Personally, I only take water if I'm going to run more than 10k , and If it's going to be hot then I will run early when it is still cool so still do not take water with me .However, I keep fully hydrated !

I will drink around 2.5 to 3 litres a day even on non running days

None unless it’s over 10 miles

Welcome to the forum. This post about hydration gives advice about fluid intake healthunlocked.com/couchto5... although it is not necessary to drink during a C25K workout.

This guide to the plan is essential reading healthunlocked.com/couchto5...

and includes advice on minimising impact, stretching after every run, hydration and strengthening exercises, all of which will help.

Enjoy your journey.

Hey, this was a revelation to me, when I did a similar programme to this with a running club years ago I used to carry water in a small bottle and take regular sips especially on the walk breaks. I thought i would never be able to run without water. Then I read on this forum for runs less than 5k if you drink plenty of water the day before and the day of the run you don't need to carry water. I honestly didn't believe I'd be able to run without water but as usual this forum is always right and I have completed 7 weeks of the programme never taking water with me and I much prefer it, running carrying a bottle I found awkward and I sometimes got a stitch after a drink.

Sorry for the long reply 😂

TLDR: I haven't taken any water with me on my C25k runs and will continue not too when running anything below 5k

It's not so much distance-related but time. Your body knows a LOT more about time than distance... think about it ... one expression of our physical condition is age, a concept of time. So you/we are 'x' years old - no-one says ... "I've done 72,500 kilometres so far" :-)

So... instead of thinking about 5k as your barometer for whether you need or not, think in terms of time, e.g. maybe over 1 hour. Although to be honest, unless it's really hot & humid outside, and providing you're well-fueled beforehand, you should be able to go for a 2 hour jog without any need for water or food.

Hello there! Much the same as Instructor57, only on longer runs which is 10k+ for me, and only a sip here and there. I only started doing that recently as the weather heated up, and I thought it would be a bit daft not too. I drink an enormous amount of water day to day, just an age old habit, which stands me in good stead as well. 💧💧💧💦💦💦.

Absolutely the same as above ! I got hung up on the water intake which didn’t end well for me ! . Take a drink before you run 5k and I totally agree longer runs sip here and there !

I’m obviously the odd one out because I do take water with me. Whilst technically you might not need it I think if you feel better drinking a little then do. It’s not a substitute for making sure you are well hydrated before a run and if you do take water just have the odd sip now and again rather than drinking a lot in one go.
