Running with or without water?

I was told in years gone by, to try and ditch the water when running a 5km. I am now on week 7 run 3 and its hot! I tend to chew on a bit of gum to keep my mouth from drying out, but not sure if I should carry water or not. I'm annoyed enough carrying my phone as not got an arm band thing for new bigger phone, and also get annoyed with my sunglasses after a while and carry them. Am used to doing without. I think I am just an irritable runner at the moment - hot, bothered and very flushed. I marshall at marathons where water is every 3 miles, is there a norm or is it personal choice to carry water?

The mentors say if you're well hydrated normally then you shouldn't need to carry water for runs up to an hour.

I'm good with hydration. I ran 1:10mins without water Saturday but had it waiting at the finish.

Everyone is different though. 👍

If you are hydrated, which mean 3 litre a day for women, 4 for men, every day, an etra litre when its hot and an extra litres per hour of exercise, then running for half an hour shoud not dehydrate you.

If you find yourself very thirsty while running then take water with you. Its that simple. Yo can't over hydrate. I drink 8 litres a day and have a bottle to hand all the time when training in this weather.

I'm on a detox thing with my bootcamp at the mo so am taking in loads of water. I don't necessarily adhere to the replacement water when exercising though so need to up the litres a bit. I just have a half litre bottle with me then. Got an hour bootcamp and then my 25 min run tonight. Thanks for the advice.

8 litres a day seems an awful lot of water, that is the equivalent of drinking 4 of those 2-litre bottles I get of lemonade which takes me a week to drink. I have a 500 mm small bottle which I carry with me in my pocket and take a sip just before I run and immediately after I finish, perhaps 4 to 8 litres is OK for doing marathons, but surely you don't need that much for a 5k.

Be interesting to hear responses on this. I don’t run with water but have been getting ‘cotton wool’ mouth in this heat about 20 mins in. Considering taking some with me but hate running with anything in my hands.

Glad its not just me that hates carrying things, I get a bit annoyed by sticky hands, and also need to wear thinner clothing in this heat as get very over heated. Its all trial and error I guess, until we find whats comfortable for us.

I took water on week 1 run 1 and didn’t need it. But it was cooler then. I’m going to judge it depending on weather. 😎

I just fill one bottle usually...it is great for pouring over your neck or wrists and just to wet your mouth... :)

Yes I do feel it’s not a drink but just some moisture in the mouth I need. Great tip!

I can’t manage without water so always take some. I wear a mini rucksack for all the bits & bobs so that keeps my hands free. A friend of mine uses a running belt. Even if I only take a mouthful of water I like to know I have it! 🙂

No, you shouldn't need water on c25k or a 5k, you should be well hydrated beforehand, but if you feel more comfortable taking a drop with you, then by all means do it, especially on hot days..

We are all different, some need some water when running, some, like me, very little before and nothing during the run.

Then again, it will depend on the previous day’s hydration level, what you’ve eaten, your body condition but also when you run. If you aren’t comfortable running in warm weather, then simply don’t and run earlier or later in the day, stick to the shade (avoid the sun), wear sensible gear - and drink lots a day before!

I always carry water, and drink it. As an aside, I feel like taking a few seconds to focus on taking a drink while running takes a bit of the monotony out of a run, plus it's so hot at the moment!

I'm with you. My mouth was so dry tonight and I drank 2ltrs during the course of today knowing I was going out for a run. I also dont want to carry anything - have bought a little running belt for my phone. If it's this hot again I might need to take some with me 😓

If you feel you need water, have water.

Most days, I drink maybe 1-2 pints of fluid in total, very rarely in the form of plain water. I've tried having more after reading various scare stories, but really had to force it down me and felt awful afterwards. Occasionally, I might drink more if I feel thirsty. I do eat a lot of salads and other veg, so probably get quite a bit of fluid from them. I just listen to my body. If I'm thirsty, I drink, if not, then I don't. It's done me for 64 years so far. :)
