I’m a consolidation runner now having finished C25K a month ago. BUT I now struggle to do the 5k and I’m a bit slower than I was then. Consistently. I think that I preferred running when it was 5C compared to 15C, is that normal? Or maybe I’m just rubbish - I thought things would improve ☹️
It was easier when it was colder?: I’m a... - Couch to 5K
It was easier when it was colder?
You are NOT just rubbish Markbrom, if you can, run earlier in the day when the temperature is at its lowest, sometimes below that magic 5C you like running in, if the weather is warm, only wear the lightest of clothing such as shorts and a T Shirt.
I’m starting week 8 tomorrow. I loved the really cold, crisp days. Dreading the summer months.
Hi markbrom , I've been running just over 11 months now and definitely prefer cooler temperatures.
Just to add: when I completed C25K I also thought I'd see consistent improvement. I didn't. I had faster days and slower days, and good days and not-so-good days. I also got bored very quickly with just doing runs of very similar distance and duration, so moved onto the Magic Plan over on the Bridge to 10k forum.
I'm not saying you have to do that, but maybe mix things up a bit. Change route, distance, whatever you listen to... it can all change your perspective and make things more enjoyable, even if you're not setting new records every time you go out. It also gives you more of a chance to discover what sort of running you like, and that might just surprise you!
I'd always assumed I'd enjoy fast-paced short distances on nice even surfaces. Nope, turns out I'm into hills and messing around on trails like a little kid.
Enjoy finding out what makes you run happy!
I completely agree about the temperature - it’s tough, but twice a week I run before work, while it’s still relatively chilly. I tried running at lunchtime and it was way too warm, and after work, that just ain’t happening! I found consolidation tricky as well, but once I realised that with me anyway, it was two steps forward, one step back and accepted it, I’ve seen a slow overall improvement. And you aren’t rubbish! Not in the least! Things will improve, you’ll see 👍🏃♂️👏🏼😊
I prefer to run (tee shirt and shorts) when it's about 10-12°C. When it gets warmer it can be less pleasant.
Next week looks to have some cooler temperatures. As others have said, when it's really warm the only comfortable time of day is the earlier morning. In the height of summer's heat (if we get it this year) I'd be looking to finish a run before 8am.
Be careful what you wish for. It is set to get colder again for the next few days. 10 degrees (if not too windy) is my cut off level to T-Shirt (and shorts - if I am brave)!
HI markbrom you are not alone, it's much nicer to run in cooler weather. I have started running earlier in the morning, for the cooler weather! 👌👍At the moment around 6ish am but after reading nowster post it might be earlier in the summer!
Warmer temperatures is where clothing material comes into its own. Something moisture wicking can make a huge difference.
I’m a huge fan of Icebreaker’s stuff and their cool-lite stuff works really well to the point that I’ve been actively choosing to run in bright sun late afternoon. It’s really not cheap though but there are some excellent synthetic equivalents.
If you’re running for your whole run, dress for 10-15 degrees warmer than it actually is anything over 10degrees, shorts and a very light T-shirt or vest is best I find.
I find it easier I wear layers so if I get to hot I can tie around my waist
I’m am right there with you on this one! I live in a very warm and humid climate where there are two seasons.. hot and hotter 😂 but seriously though, climate is 78•F (25C) and the humidity is 85%...is a cool time of our day, which I do my jogs at 6am. I find that this is only the beginning of what’s to come! But you are correct, you’re still out there and that’s what’s important. Go early is what I would suggest if you aren’t doing that already. Keep up the good job! 👏🏻
For me it’s normal to prefer running in colder weather! There are loads of people on here that say they prefer running when the suns out! I’m running early in the morning to avoid the warmer weather. So you’re not on your own 😀
