Week 9 completed, Thoughts of a 56 year who couldn’t run 5k in school.

Week nine completed and I have stuck to the plan. I feel very pleased with myself and will try to share some of my learnings.

1. Have a reason start, and keep your eyes on that prize.

I started the plan because my daughter is getting married in August, and I want to get myself in better shape.

Nine weeks on I am a lot fitter, and feel I have started a journey towards a healthier lifestyle.

2 Be kind to yourself, you are on your way to becoming a better you.

Can I run for 30 mins, Yes. Can I run 5k, Yes, Can I run 5k in 30 mins No.

I only realised in week 8 that my running time would not achieve 5k in 30 mins, This didn’t worry me, I had built up from struggling to run 3 mins to being able to run for30 mins. 5k takes me just under 40 mins. Everybody is different, every time you leave the house you are making progress, that’s all that matters.

3. Following a set programme like C25K works.

Having a programme to follow works. The discipline of following a weekly plan really helped me. Some days I didn’t feel like it, but I had made a commitment to myself to stick to the nine weeks, I’m glad I did, I won’t be in the Olympics any time soon, but I’m better than I was nine weeks ago, and that’s a good enough for me.

Not rocket science, just remember you are the easiest person to fool yourself. You are also the person who will get most benefit from your efforts.

If you think you can or you think you can’t you’re probably right.

Good Luck, go for it. 👍

Thank you for the tips and CONGRATULATIONS! I’ve only just finished week 1 and I thought it was going to be a lot easier than it was. I thought that it would start off easy and then gradually increase so you can barely notice it getting longer. WELL turns out I am so unfit that even just 1 minute of running is a struggle (and I’m 30, thin and have no physical ailments!). I’ve been wondering how I’m ever going to get to running for 30 minutes without stopping when I can BARELY get through the first week! If I hadn’t started doing this C-5k with a friend, I would have already thrown in the towel and declared it as ‘Too hard, I can’t tun, I’m not a runner, I will never be a runner, I’m fine on the couch’. Having read your journey and advice though has been encouraging, so thank you. Hopefully I can also complete the C-5K in 8 weeks from now and become “a runner” too!! Fingers crossed! 🤞🥵🤞...😊

Thanks, the main thing is you have started and completed week one, well done you. A very strange thing happens after a few weeks, your body starts to want the exercise, your mind might not, but your body appreciates it.Stick with it, it’s not easy but you can do it.😉
