Back to try again after 5 years, words of encouragement please

Hi I used to post on here 5 years ago when I was doing the couch to 5k with a running club and I remember it being a really useful and supportive place.

I'm thinking about starting up the couch to 5k using the app, I'm really nervous, I used to run with a club and friends I've never ran alone. I'm also not very fit.

Any words of encouragement, motivations, reasons to start etc would be really appreciated

Welcome back ! You know it makes sense 😁

I certainly wasen't here when you last posted then but it is certainly still a very supportive place.

And if you did this before then you know what to expect 😁

No need to be nervous, just take it slowly and enjoy , might be worth re reading the program guide though 😁👍

Welcome back to the forum Popstress, perhaps there are a few names still here that you may recognise, not me, I joined the forum in September 2017 but did not get started with run 1 of week 1 of C25K until April 2018, I think Oldfloss, Irish Princess and Irish John were on the forum 5 years ago.

Regarding runs, take all the runs slowly, you can repeat any runs or week's if you wish to, drink plenty of water to avoid dehydration, no running on consecutive days, good luck for your reruns of C25K.

Welcome back to the forum and well done on your decision.

There is nothing to be nervous about. Follow the instructions and C25k works.

This guide to the plan is essential reading healthunlocked.com/couchto5...

and includes advice on minimising impact, stretching after every run, hydration and strengthening exercises, all of which will help.

Enjoy your journey.

Welcome back!

You know the score: trainers on, get out the front door, go slowly, don’t over-think it.

When you get home, tell us all about it. We’ll keep you motivated.

AND GOOD LUCK!

Agh thanks everyone!!! You've really motivated me to give it another go!

I've just finished reading the plan guide, lots of great info in there.

I'm on annual leave from work this week, I might go out tomorrow and start. I'm really not sure where to actually run.

I've always ran with people and feel really self conscious running on my own 😬 but I guess I'll get used to that.

Hello, I also run alone and I really enjoy it, you set the pace, you decide where to go, and it's really nice to get in your own headspace and just drift off in your thoughts. I use plot a route to give me an idea of where to go, distance etc. Good luck and it's true what others are saying your not alone were in this together 😁🏃‍♀️

Popstess I run alone and "naked" (running with no music) been doing this for a couple of months now, I like to run early morning before work very peaceful on what I call my lit winter routes. Now it's getting lighter I will be trying different routes.

I have found when I lack motivation is to think why did I start this. Sometimes I wonder why I didn't start running sooner.

Enjoy!

Thanks everyone well I did it! I've just been out for my first run. It was okay not as bad as expected. I found it quite enjoyable, I just ran in the local park but I think I'd prefer a better route as I felt like I was zig zagging back and forth on myself and felt a bit self conscious of the other people in the park. I know they probably don't care or even notice but I still felt conscious.

My shins feel a little tender which worries me as I got really bad shin splints last time I did this so really want to avoid that. I stretched when I got home though. I maybe need new running trainers but I'm hesitant to buy some now incase I don't keep it up.

That's great news well done!!!

Actions to take that may help with shin pain include:

In the first instance, perhaps take a couple of days off before your next run - since you have not run for a while it would make sense to ease back in gently.

Lessen impact by shortening your stride and increasing your cadence (steps per minute). Have a look a the Japanese slow jogging technique, which you might find helpful (IannodaTruffe has a video in his guide).

Also reduce impact by running on softer surfaces such as short grass or woodland trails. If you do end up getting new shoes you might like to try some with extra cushioning.

Work on your hip and lower leg strength (again, some exercises are linked from Truffe's post).

Good luck and have fun!! xxx

Thank you for all the tips and info I will have a look for those videos. I have bought some new trainers which have extra cushioning.

I'm dare I say excited to start week 2!

I've just looked looked at some of your past posts. How's the ankle?

Popstess profile image
PopstessGraduate in reply to nowster

My ankles great at the moment "touch wood" I have a bit of a week spot so it's easy to roll and sprain. But so far so good, hopefully it'll behave itself this time round.

I know what you mean. My left foot is vulnerable to deltoid ankle ligament sprains. I've managed to avoid spraining it again by recognising the signs and backing off the running for a week or two when it complains.

It's frustrating isn't it, my main aim is to complete the c25k without any injuries this time. If that means going slow and plenty of rest days then so be it. I'm also fanatical about stretching whereas last time I didn't do any stretching tut tut.

Welcome back. Look, the fact that you’ve popped on here means that you know that C25K will be good for you so give it a go - what the worst thing that can happen?! I think that you will enjoy the freedom of running alone. You can go at your own pace, you can go out for your runs whenever it suits you - it’s going to be great. You wait and see 😉
