Week 3 Run 1 painful left knee

On week 3 run 1, had to stop after the first three minute run as my knee started really hurting. I have proper running shoes now, but didnt for the first two weeks. Feel very deflated that i had to stop... Did anyone else experience this? And does it spell the end of my journey already?

Normal in weeks 2-4 to get knee pain. It’ll go in a week or so. Take ibuprofen in the meantime.

Do you try and run again or leave it fully?

I mean you should probably stop but I took an ibuprofen an hour before my run and carried on.

Welcome to the forum and well done on getting started.

This guide to the plan is essential reading healthunlocked.com/couchto5...

and includes advice on minimising impact, stretching after every run, hydration and strengthening exercises, all of which will help.

Enjoy your journey.

I had same. It passes. Keep stretching, squats etc and hydration.

Did you rest and have a break or shall i keep going?

I kept going but really slowly and with an extra rest day between runs. That with exercises meant that two weeks later it eased. We’re all different so best to listen to your body by moving but keep it slow - speed comes later! Look forward to hearing how you get on so keep us posted!

Its not that uncommon. Rather than pain killers use something to cool the joint. The old bag of frozen peas trick or fairly cheap spray or cream from the Chemist/Superdrug will help reduce the inflammation which is causing the pain.

Speaking from experience. It is better to take a few runs out than it is to continue running and hope the pain will fade in time…..it doesn’t and it will then just take longer to go away.
