So I went out at 07:15 this morning,
First run in 13 days .
It was cold first thing , was going to wear gloves but not ideal for navigating the playlist on my phone ! so decided to leave them at home .
Halfway through my warmup walk I was tempted to go back and get them , but didn't
Once I had GPS lock (which took a while) I set off way too fast , I didn't feel like it but when I first looked at the watch I thought sloooow down !
It was important that I didn't burn out too early with this being the first run in 13 days , anyway, settled down within the first half K.
It didn't really take long to feel in the groove again apart from a little left knee niggle at about 2K
This was a little concern as I don't usually feel it at this distance, I usually notice it if I'm on a 10K and generally comes in around 8K.
Anyway, it didn't become more than a niggle so didn't really affect my run .
I hadn't really decided how far I was going to run today , all I knew was I wanted to be out here again running .
My work has stopped again from today so needed my running for both physical AND mental fitness.
I used the route that I used for my C25K runs so I know how far I have gone .
Once I reached around 3.5K I decided I would do a 5K.
I could have easily carried on but thought no, with it being the first run in 13 days and a knee niggle I don't think it would have been sensible !
So, 5K done , stretches done , porridge done ! π
Oh, and here is a random picture of my cat Misty !
Why ?
Well, why not π

Aww so glad you got out there Mister
Well done πππ
Wise to stop at 5k - itβs easy to carry on once youβre in the groove but as itβs your first run for a while it makes sense.. π
How cute is Misty πΊπ

Thanks Jane !
Yes, I didn't want to push it and regret it afterwards.
And Yes, Misty also thinks she's cute ππΊ

Oh yes! She most definitely knows she is cute.
Good for you for getting that run in! Wise to stop when you did though I think. I'm sure it won't be long before you are well and truly back in the groove.
Keep an eye on that knee niggle though...

Thanks , yes I will watch the knee !
I do have a little arthritis in my knees and of course not run for a while .
And it's a good job misty can't read the replies or she would be unbearable ππΊ

AlMorr Ambassador Graduate 4 years ago What a lovely cat Misty is, like getting new shoes it is a must for runners to show off their pets.
Great run for you today Instructor57, glad you enjoyed it although it was rather cold, watch out for any icy patches.

Nice to see that you got out there today! Beautiful cat, nice to snuggle up with during lockdown winter!
This was a sensible approach to your run today. I think that maybe you just needed a little rest!
On gloves, I ordered some windproof gloves made by Ronhill, which are fine for phone fiddling.
Interesting about your knee, my knees hurt on my 5k run yesterday and I wonder if it's the cold. It was unusual so need to monitor how it goes.
Nice to see you back!

Thanks !
I also have a little arthritis in my knees so don't know if it's just because of the cold or not .
They used to both bother me on long walks but not on runs until around 8K
I will need to be wary of it

Oh, I check out them gloves π

What are the knee excercises you do ?
Are they from James dunne ?
Reply (0)Report
No, they are exercises I've done for years. When I'm sitting, it involves lifting the leg, flexing foot and holding or pulsing the leg up and down. Also LOTS of squats. I avoid JD for knee exercises but stick to what I know. My knees are definitely not right, but didn't hurt on my 10 mile run! It all started days later!
Good luck, if you come across any new magic exercises let me know.

Well done, Ian! It was nice out this morning. I prefer it to be cold than hot.
You did a sensible 5K after your break from running. Well done! ππππ
I hope it felt good to be out there again. Take care of that knee!
Misty looks gorgeous! ππ

Thanks Jools , yes it was good to be out again !
I think with the knees it is probably nothing new, I do have a little arthritis in my knees and they used to bother me on long walks ,
They were ok when running usually up to around 8k.
But don't usually feel it on a 5k
Maybe the cold dosent help .
I will monitor it !
And yes, Misty is adorable (well, most of the time ) ππΊ

I took thin gloves with me in my shorts pocket the last two times I've been out. I didn't use them.
One bit of advice from across the Atlantic (where they have much more severe winters than us in the UK) is that if you're out and your hands start to feel cold, you should have already been wearing gloves, and it's going to be hard to warm them up just by putting gloves on already cold hands.
Misty looks very smug in the photo. I like cats and have kept cats in the past, but unfortunately I'm allergic to them. (Confirmed by an allergy test I had for something unrelated.)

Thanks for the advice re gloves !
The ones I have are actually cycling gloves and would be ok apart from using the phone .
I guess it's just a case of starting my playlist before I leave the house !
And yes, Misty does have rather a smug look on her face !
Oh, Shame about the allergy !

Perfect picture of your cat, so very cute. Sensible not to over do it after your break but still 5k, not to be sniffed at!

Thank you !
It was nice to get running again ,
And I can't believe how many pictures of the cat that I have on my phone ππΊ

Is Misty the cat spoilt?
We have a very spoilt elderly ginger tabby called baby who is 16!

Sometimes she gets spoilt π

Hi Ian,
Oh wow Misty is so beautiful, she looks so adorable π.
Well done for getting back out there. Hope your knee is OK?
The running really does make such a difference to mental health.
Take care
Rebecca

Thank you, yes she is adorable ππΊ
I think my knee will be ok , perhaps doing 5k after 13 days was not the best decision π
Will see how the next run goes !
Hope you enjoy the 10k plan π

Hi Ian,
I bet she is spoilt!! Very sweet.
That is good. I must say I notice a difference on my knees when I run on the pavements think that is why I run in the park a lot feels much easier on the knees!
I plan to go out tomorrow and Monday.
Take care
Rebecca

She is absolutely spoilt , she is on my knee at the moment (maybe that's why it aches ππΊ)
Every run I have done apart from my last 10k has been on pavement/Tarmac .
I actually found it tricky going off road π
I hope to get out again over the weekend , not sure if tomorrow or Sunday yet π
Enjoy your run tomorrow, ππ

Ah bless her!
Lol I find it better on the tarmac in the park find the pavements harder although may be because when I got the niggle on my knee had stayed on the pavements that run.
That is good, enjoy your run,
Thank you

Great that you ran, great that you enjoyed it, great picture of Misty....running IS great isn't it π I, for one, am very thankful for my new hobby (obsession)
Good luck with the gloves and hope that the knee is already feeling more comfortable so that you can continue to get out there....ππ
