W2 Run2 and knees getting worse

Did w2 run2 this morning after having a two day rest over weekend. Doing the dynamic stretches before and static stretches after and also drinking more water as suggested. Managed the runs fine as far as energy concerned, but my knee stiffness and pain (in both knees) is getting worse. Have booked a gait analysis for tomorrow but also worried about spending more money on trainers if I'm just not cut out for running. Has anyone else had this kind of knee pain in the early weeks and then come through it? Feeling despondent.

Hi I’ve just done W6 but had the knee pain the first 2 weeks. I did the “wet foot on paper” thing and saw I had flat feet so needed the arch support in

shoes. Bought a pair of ASICS and not looked back - along with the leg strengthening exercises the pain is no more! Good luck but don’t give up 👍

"I got a stiff neck and I've not looked back since." 😁

Uncomfortable knees are very common in the first few weeks.

I do have flat feet and also wide feet. So maybe that is my problem. I bought some New Balance trainers when I started (just off the shelf, no gait analysis), so maybe they aren't the right ones for me. Are ASICS good for flat feet or just the right shoes for you?

They’re GT Xuberance and have an arch support - not sure if the support just happens to suit my feet though! I haven’t had a gait analysis done just read up on which trainers gave good support and seem to have got lucky x I’m 61 this year so they may get worse ....

Maybe just knees responding to a new activity. I have been running for 30 months now and I developed runners' knee recently. I now apply a hot water bottle for ten minutes and gently massage the knee cap before each run, and it really helps. My problem is probably different to yours though; I am 68! Your knees should get stronger as you progress.

I’m sure other manufacturers offer the same but when I bought Brooks running shoes, it offered a no quibble, money back guarantee within 90 days. It says you can use them as much as you want in that time, and it’s well within the 9 week C25k programme.

Have your analysis done but bear this in mind before buying, ask if the shop offers the same deal. Proper running shoes aren’t cheap. 🙂

Are you doing knee strengthening exercises and following the advice in the guide to the plan on minimising impact?

I started the knee strengthening exercises at the weekend, so obviously won't have had an effect yet. I'm pretty sure I'm running slowly enough and not taking big strides. I'm also running on grass.
