W9R3: The end of the beginning

Time: 7.55am Weather: 12°C, broken cloud, breezy, damp, recent rain.

It's not over. It's just starting.

This is it. Graduation run. Paul's going to be a naughty boy today. He's going to try for the 5km.

The loo gremlin visited before I went out, and I dithered a fair bit. I also forgot to have a drink. The weather radar said it was torrential rain outside but a look through the window said otherwise.

No big hills today. I'm going to do the mostly downhill/flat course I did two Saturdays ago (W8R1).

It's damp out again and the slugs are out in force on the pavements.

Past the post office, along the straight turnpike road, round the motorway roundabout, past the fire station, a left turn, slight incline past the park...

Left again, still on a slight climb, crested that... mostly downhill from now on. Past the old HMSO depot, past the hotel that looks closed, under the motorway. Nearly there! Keep going. Skirt a nasty puddle.

Jo says I'm nearly done. A glance at the watch. The distance is tantalisingly close to 5km. Keep going!

And Jo says the time's up. The watch vibrates for a km lap. I keep going for another 40 seconds to the next junction just in case the watch didn't record things properly.

And it's done! Slightly knackered but satisfied.

Now to get home which takes another half an hour, through parkland and residential back streets. In the park I make a wrong turn and end up on a very wet and muddy path, whereas I could have stayed on the tarred "road" and got to the same exit. I'm making a habit of this. About halfway home the rain starts. Thankfully it never progressed beyond more than a drizzle.

Once home I check the timing splits. 5km in 30'04.7". I'll take that!

My left shin is twinging a little now, probably because I was silly in pushing to keep up the pace. Definitely an extra recovery day is needed before I start on the consolidation runs, and I promise I'll go slower on those.

Stats:

Distance: 5.09km (running, 30'39"), 8.21km including walks

Pace (running): 6'01"/km. Splits (by km): 5'51", 6'03", 6'16", 5'57", 5'58"/km (and 6'12" on the overrun)

Top speed: 10.9km/h, 5'30"/km

~~~
Today I was again listening to Marty in the Morning on RTÉ Lyric FM:
07:50 Shania Twain - Forever And For Always
07:55 John Scott Orchestra - Sailing By (Binge)
08:00 David Saul - Don't Give Up On Us
08:04 Offenbach - Gaite Parisienne - Valse Lente
08:10 Gene Kelly, Donald O'Connor & Debbie Reynolds - Good Mornin' (from Singing in the Rain)
08:16 The Divine Comedy - Father Ted Theme (An Post, the Irish Post Office, are issuing Father Ted themed stamps today)
08:17 Herb Alpert - Casino Royale
08:22 Eddi Reader - Dragonflies
08:33 Frank Sinatra - Strangers in the Night
Thanks to everyone. It's been helpful to have reflected on each run as I've written it up a couple of hours later.
Things like, "Why did that feel good? Why did I nearly collapse there? That bit was fast but it didn't feel it at the time."
Wow well done and congratulations!!! I did mine too, not quite as good as you but 4.6k in 30 mins absolutely chuffed! Hope you’re feeling ok and get to enjoy the rest of your day - loving the soundtracks too, my final song was The Killers, Mr Brightside as I finished, then Katy Perry Firework as I finished the 5 min walk at the end - extremely appropriate!! 🏆🤩🍾
Your 4.6km is pretty close! Well done you! That's probably what I'd have done if I had chosen a hillier route. My next run will definitely be slower. I'm definitely feeling the burn in the legs now three hours later.
The smug feeling probably won't wear off for a few days, though. 😀
I wrote up my report whilst still wearing my running kit. It wasn't until I took it off a few minutes later that I realised how wet my shoes and socks still were. 🧦
Fantastic run 👏👏👏 you got it.
Is that with your barefoot 🦶 trainers?
Got mine at last merrell glove 5 and I’m happy with them 👍 tried the 4 but they are funny long looking 😂😂
nowster profile image
nowsterGraduate in reply toMccHa
It was indeed in my barefoot Vibram KSO EVOs.
You be careful with the Merrells if you haven't worn zero drop shoes before. Definitely don't do 13km in them just yet. I'd suggest 100 yards maximum in the first day and then gradually work up the distances. You've got to strengthen those calf muscles to support the foot.
Thank you for the advice nowster 🙏 lucky today I was wearing my usual old trainers 🤞
I’m using the Merrell for my walking at the moment to get use to them as you said...
I’ve enjoyed reading your write-ups and hope you will continue to post!
I will definitely continue to post.
I need to get slower and go further now, and definitely work in a lower HR zone. There's plenty still to do. All that's happening today is I'm taking the stabilizers off the bike wheels.
Normal service should be resumed tomorrow. I definitely overdid it on Friday pushing for the magic number, and I've paid for my arrogance.
in reply tonowster
Aww, I’m sorry if you’re a bit sore, I’m constantly sore, but that’s old age 🤣😂You would have been so annoyed had you stopped short of 5k !
You were so close you knew you could do it...have fun with your run tomorrow, relax and enjoy it...🏃
I've not been idle today. Lots of overgrown lilac tree branches and brambles have magically been turned into sawdust, enough to fill the wheelie bin.
in reply tonowster
Think that’s where I am tomorrow, but it’s a monster hawthorn hedge, you’re not free are you...only joking 🙃
Fab run! 👏👏👏 and big congratulations on the graduation! 🏁 🎓
Enjoy a few days rest now 👏👏
nowster profile image
nowsterGraduate in reply toTinytears60
I have been! That run was Friday morning. My plan for tomorrow, having had two days off, is to do a heart rate zone based much much slower run. I've already set my watch to tell me off when I stray upwards. 😉
I'm resting - did a 2k walk and a 2k run and had to stop cos was painful... now lay on bed practicing the RICE method!... :-(
I really can't believe how much the ICE helps....
Rest for me... for a week at least! :-(
Take it easy mister
