Failed spectacularly

Today should’ve been my fifth 5k but unfortunately I only managed 3. Running into a warm strong south westerly breeze didn’t help. Also my Fitbit versa wouldn’t tether to my phone which was also playing on my mind. So I stopped and started to walk home very angry with myself. There’s a stretch of road leading to mine with loads of lampposts so I decided to do some interval running. Ran as fast as I can for three lampposts then walk two. I actually quite enjoyed that so maybe start mixing it up doing 5k one run then the next doing some interval training.

Sorry you're feeling disappointed about the 5K.... but your run doesn't sound like a failure to me..... interval training is on my to-do list (at some point) once I've consolidated my 30 minute runs... I've read it's good to mix up your runs a bit.... I guess you just started that today, even if unplanned.

I don't know when you graduated, but it isn't necessary to run 5k on each run. You adapted your run to be shorter intervals, so maybe embed those shorter runs in your plan once a week? If you haven't yet finished consolidating your 30 min runs yet, then carry on doing that for a while? Sounds like you're doing great.

Running in the wind is tough. Far harder than rain, snow etc. Intervals/hills are great to do once every week or two 👍🏽

Lying on the sofa and not getting out is a fail. Great to do 3km and not a fail.

Try 30 secs sprints. plan 5 mins brisk walk the fast as you can for 30 secs then walk two mins repeat 12 times then 5 mins walk at end. Do once a week for four weeks. Great for speed and stamina I love them .

Helps increase distance too. If you go with someone else too it makes you go faster good luck

Thanks for the advice. I did enjoy the interval running even though it wasn’t structured properly. Will definitely do it more often

It sounds like I’m an expert runner when in fact I’m currently on the couch literally with a broken ankle so would love to be doing 30 sec intervals 🤣🤣

Not a fail at all

You ran 3k and did some interval work. Fantastic!

Not every run has to be 5k. It's good to mix things up a bit

It like you turned around a bad run into a productive one. Not a fail.

If you read some of my posts you will see I’ve really struggled to let go of the ‘5k achievement’ until I listened to some of my friends on here!

I have a 5k Competitive Annie in my head...

BUT

Earlier this week I ran 2k at my fastest ever pace

And today I ran 4K .. and then Walked for 2k ... total 6k

It’s definitely I felt good to mix it up and I need to show my Gremlin I’m the boss!👺🙈

The main thing is we are both still getting out and about! 👏👏👏

Today I could have easily done 5k but I took the control and Went for 4K ... it felt great.. I will still do 5k’s but no longer beat myself up for doing less

👍

Ps- you didn’t fail! You ran for 3 then ran some fartlek runs ... that’s a bloody good run in my eyes 👍

I know I turned it around and done those fartleks (the inner child still laughs at that word) but I still can’t quite turn the defeatist demon in my head off.

Exactly the same as me! But in order to get better we need to kill those thoughts once and for all 😳🙈🙈

That Gremlin needs to be evicted! 👺👊

Yes but how?

Tinytears60 profile image
Tinytears60Graduate in reply toPMcL1966

Doing what I do- forcing yourself to stop short of 5k ... you have to gain control of that Gremlin!

Read my last post.. I struggled BUT I did it .. and the post before that.. I ran a short 2k but it’s my best pace ever!...

We control the gremlins! Initially it’s a fight but it will get easier..

we are NOT failing! 👏👏👏

Oh and the fartleks build speed and stamina too so I’m reliably informed!

We need to remember we are still relative newcomers to all this and we’ve done amazing to get here.... we don’t want to risk injury

You got this! 👏👏👏
