My knees hurt

I’m 60 years old and was bought some running shoes for my birthday so I could start this. I managed the first 2 weeks but my knees hurt all the time (not when I run but before and after) and I don’t know whether to carry on. I really want to.

Exercise / stretching advice please.

I weigh 70 kg so no too overweight but maybe I shouldn’t be running at all.

I am 43 and had been housebound with an inflammatory bowel disease for 2 years before starting this plan. My knees and lower back sometimes really hurt me. I think it’s the stress on the body of the jogging and just exercising itself x I am going to give myself one whole rest day a week with no activities at all, and only walk very slowly on active recovery days and then run for 3 days. I am looking into strengthening exercises that complement jogging now, I’m sure that someone on here will provide a link to some such practices. With all those things together I should see some improvement, can you get a compression garment for the knees? Running socks are cool for the calves but a nice knee elastic type garment should help? X hope you get better ASAP and it doesn’t stop you completing the programme

Thank you. I’m trying Ibuorofen gel which seems to help a bit with the aching. Scared I’ll do more damage though.

Welcome to the forum and well done on getting started.

This guide to the plan is essential reading healthunlocked.com/couchto5...

and includes advice on minimising impact, stretching after every run, hydration and strengthening exercises, all of which will help.

Enjoy your journey.

Make sure you do the appropriate stretches as per guide and start doing knee strengthening exercises.

Definitely try some knee exercises, even very gentle knee bends tend to help.

🤞🤞🤞

Thank you. I rested for a day then did some stretches and bends. The first run hurt a bit but I kept going and stretched after too.

It all takes so long though- so fine on a Sunday but not on a work day!

I’m going to try to keep strengthening my thighs and knees.
