I never was a runner so 60 secs of running in week one was a struggle for me. What helped was the music I like in my ears! Give yourself time, pat yourself on your back for doing week run one and give yourself permission to attempt run two! 👍🌼
You can do it! If all 8 runs are too much in week 1, have a week 0.5 first, where you build up from say 4 to 5 to 6 - and then do week 1 proper the next week.
I never dreamt that I would get past week 2, but I did week 8 run 1 yesterday - I still sometimes think I am dreaming, because I know I can't possibly be running!
You will find I am not the only one who says how unbelievable it is! Trust yourself, and trust the programme - it moves you along very gently.
You have done the hardest thing by deciding to do this, signing up, and going out for your first run. Once you are past your second run, it will start getting easier every time you go out!
You’re not alone - it’s very tough particularly at the start but somehow, one run at a time, you can get through. It sometimes feels like it takes all you’ve got to finish a run but you will and then you start to get some ups with the downs and it feels like a great achievement to see the progress. Hang in there - it really works and it wouldn’t be so worth doing if it was easy! We’re all on your side.
My husband and I are both late 50s very overweight and are battling through the programme. Every run we think we can’t do it, but do. We have to trust it that it works because if we start to challenge or question it that would be enough doubt to stop and give up. We are now on week 7 and running 25 mins. Something we could never have imagined possible 6 weeks ago. You are stronger than you think. Keep going
I’m 60 a lot overweight and pretty unfit and managed. Take your time and repeat runs if you need but remember to go slowly. It’s not a race but a personal challenge. Take each session as it comes and try not to look at what’s to come. My first week I wondered what on earth I signed up to 😱You’ll be great at this! Good luck!
Just slow the run bits down , then a bit slower, then slower still and even then you are probably going too fast. That’s what I found. Speed is not the thing , it’s the action of running. I was struggling when I started.. thought I was dying 19 seconds into the first run. But I persevered and last summer I ran for over 3 hours without stopping!! And I’m 67! And if you get through this first week there are only 6 runs in the next week and they get less and less as you go in. Think of it that way.
Also we ran out and back when we started ( daughter and I) and that meant we turned in the 4th walk, (so only 4 left, only 3, only 2 ...) in week 1, so from then on we were heading home again and you can see the “finishing line “. Then in 3rd walk on week 2 etc.
Hi Tondy, well done for starting and completing W1R1 👍👍👍
I turned 60 in June and an not fit but my last run I managed 56 minutes which is something I NEVER thought I would be able to do.
So take it as slowly As you can as there is no rush. The slower you go the easier it will be for you and the longer you will find yourself lasting. Bit by bit by bit and you WILL get there, if you want to that is 🤗.
Keep posting on here and the support you will receive will keep you motivated and keep your interest going.
Have a google of the slow jogging technique as this has been a life saver for me.
I think almost everyone finds the first few really challenging as you are doing something new...
Once you get past week 5 you KNOW you can do it as you have seen progress and your own development. The first few weeks that little voice telling you can’t is much louder.
But you CAN! You can absolutely do it! Some people just take a little longer than others but that’s ok 😍
Thank you so much everyone - mind set changed - going to take each day one at a time - since reading your comments I have done a second run - I felt a raised spirit - you have so helped 👍
Ok so going to have a good look at flow running technique mentioned, do a count back eg -only 3 more to go , take each day as a new challenge - one on its own - and start each challenge with I CAN DO THIS 👍feeling not alone , supported and even proud of myself 😘
