Winter clothing

So I’d like to ask you professional runners what your winter gear is? I’m female and just trying to get prepared. I’m now at week 6 run 2 - will do the 3rd run on Wednesday (eeek 25 mins straight!) I’m loving it so much that I’m thinking about what clothing I will need in the winter 👍🏼😀

Long leggings and a T-shirt and sometimes a base layer but I get too hot in minus temperatures 🤣

Thank you! I’m the opposite always cold. But do get hot whilst running

Shorts, t-shirt, buff, gloves 🤣

Layers are your friend for when you get warmed up.

Oh no way couldn’t do shorts in the winter! I can’t do shorts now in the summer but then again I’m out the doors by 7am when it’s not as hot. If I went out later maybe but I prefer morning time!

Actually, good technical leggings or trousers will keep you cooler... which I’m discovering this summer and will take into winter. I’d say see how it goes... if your legs feel cold while running then go get some winter spec leg wear... with tops I’d go for layers over a single winter spec one unless it’s really cold. I cover my head and ears with the buff (I can pull that off and change it to a wristband if I overheat or a neck warmer if needed) and the gloves help a lot... I run in them all year round, but they have a pull over bit that turns them into wind blocking mittens if it’s cold.

Long sleeved t-shirt, normal t-shirt, hi vis jacket for the early/late dark nights. Headband to cover the ears, they get very cold! Leggings, shorts over them if you get a cold bum 😂

Funnily enough I thought about this on my run last night. I used to run loads and stopped because of a serious injury. I'm back running now and, after seeing how the injury has recovered, dared to think longer term running through winter.

I love running on winter mornings. No one around, crisp clean air. It's like the world is on pause as you quietly jog through the darkness. Anyway, I digress...

I use a decent base layer, followed by a good wicking t-shirt, followed by a hooded long sleeved running jacket/training top that has thumb holes in the sleeves, a bit like this images.app.goo.gl/PbEr36chL... . Thin running gloves, and yes, shorts. I very rarely run in long bottoms, I overheat covering too much up. I think I've run just a handful of times with long bottoms but I'm pretty sure there was snow on the ground when I did.

I'm not a fan of long bottoms neither. My legs get too warm and I need a (freezing) breeze.

Thank you so much for asking this question. It is something that I have been thinking about a lot. I have Raynauds so am always cold. I find the cold incredibly painful especially in my fingers and toes, so much so that they feel as though I have trapped everything in a door. I usually wear lots and lots of layers (read Michelin woman) just in the house so am dreading running outdoors in winter. I used to wear at least 7 layers to walk the dog in winter and 4 pairs of socks in an attempt to keep warm.

I have a big birthday coming up in a couple of months so I know what I will be asking for.

Happy running everyone

Me too EThomas ! I feel like you’ve just described me perfectly. Raynauds sucks.

Happy big birthday when it arrives! X

Thermal leggings and long sleeved thermal tops, plus a t shirt, head band to keep my ears warm, thermal gloves and a waterproof jacket. I love running in the rain. 😊. It really is a case of layers and you eventually figure out how many layers according to air temperature and wind The first winter I ran I kept a note of clothing and temperature for each run so last winter it was easier.

However I did learn that a camel back filled with water on a cold day is not a good idea. My back got so cold I had to call hubby to rescue me i was in so much pain. 🥴.

I got some amazing running trousers from Decathlon for the cooler months. Kalenji run warm. They're cheap. They're comfortable and flattering like leggings and designed for the cold. I have 2 thicker long sleeve tops, thermal, for winter running and some gloves. I bought a waterproof goretex jacket but have never worn it. I get too hot even in winter and find the shirts are enough.

I’m still going to go out in shorts and T-shirt! That’s the beauty of running, keep it simple. On cold mornings when I’ve put a hoody on, after 5 mins running I’m tying it around my waist 😅

A buff round the neck, long leggings, a long sleeve thicker top on really cold days, or a thinner one. Running gloves definitely for me. A hi-viz shower/wind proof running jacket with flashing light for running in dark. No need to buy until later as you will find more choice in season. Happy running.

I could go into enormous detail about the clothes I run in (I am a bit of a gear head when it comes to running clothes, even if I am still a little ambivalent about running sometimes!) but the one thing I could not be without is my hat. It has a peak for cold, sunny days, I can fit my hair through the flap in the back and it covers my ears and the back of my head – but if I overheat, I can just turn that part up and cool down a little.

I think this is the same as mine, although I have a black one. Trailheads make great hats, I also have a headband from them for when it is cold but not sunny - amazon.co.uk/TrailHeads-Fle...

In the dead cold of winter, I wear thin calf tights under Brooks winter full length leggings. Hat, buff, gloves, tech shirt under a fleece, under a bright yellow rain 🧥. Wool socks. I did c25k starting in Jan so learned pretty quickly about layers, and zipping/unzipping to regulate temp. Favorite temp to run in: 45F/7C.

I’ve recently bought some Under Armour Heatgear clothing, keeps you cool in the warm and warm in the cool apparently 🤷🏻‍♂️

Worked well so far 😊

I get too hot so in the winter I wore a long sleeve top and a buff. In very cold weather I wore gloves but they were mainly taken off after 10 mins. I can't bear the wind so wear a hat. I tried various types but now just wear a beret! It might be odd along with the running gear, but it is so comfy. Occasionally I wear a light top layer too, but that normally gets taken off too!

I bought myself a replacement Moonwrap robe. This is a well thought out and quality product, see here frostfire.co.uk/ ! Just returned from a triathlon in the rain and was totally impressed. From its many oversized zippered pockets (so wallets, phones, keys and badges won't be lost), cozy warm fleece lining and waterproof exterior, to high-quality zippers and topstitching, it far exceeds its weight, making it feel dry and warm synchronization!
