Running on a road

Hello

Just looking for clarification. When running on the road, should I be running towards the traffic? I ask because I see many runners out at the moment and there doesn’t seem to be any rule.

Thanks

Hi, my Dad always taught me to walk or run towards the traffic as a security thing ie a vehicle wouldn’t be able to come up behind me, I can always see what’s coming.

It is generally safer to walk or run towards he traffic, so that traffic behind you is not on your side of the road, and you can see what is coming on your side. The exception is if the right side is on the inside of a bend where you can see and be seen better if you move to the outside of the bend.

I was told always to face the oncoming traffic except on a blind corner or a hill summit where a vehicle coming towards wouldn’t see you. I briefly cross to the other side of the road when it is safe in those circumstances but move back as soon as it is safe to do so.

I see quite a few runners running on the left hand side of the road. This might be due to races being run on the left hand side of the road.

Thank you all. We all seem to be of the same mind which has put me a little at ease.

In this time of social distancing I think it would be good if we all understood the same and that I didn’t have to run into the middle of the road to go around a runner coming the other way but what can you do.

Happy running.

Yeah with every running with headphones nowadays it’s definitely safer running at traffic as strange as that sounds 😂
