I’m just back from a run. I’m doing my best to adapt to the lockdown changes but I do wonder what people are thinking sometimes. I mean the family/household groups out for their daily walk, which seems to involve walking in a line across the pavement & so taking up the whole pavement.
Also with walkers, I’ve started to notice it’s nearly always me that moves & while, if I think about it, it probably is easier if I move, moving usually involves running into the road. The roads are v quiet but at one point when I did this last week, the walker on the pavement had to shout a warning because some nutter driver was doing an illegal overtake coming over a hill & bearing down on me! I know runners aren’t particularly popular at present but just a little consideration would be appreciated!
Rant over!
Though, whilst I’m here, is it time to replace my running shoes? Had them a year & been running x3 a week for a year (hooray!)

It's aggravating isn't it when you really want to do something and things get put in your way!
Some of us runners aren’t helping ourselves. A lot of walkers are complaining about encountering runners on narrow paths or in underpasses. Probably best to stick to wider open paths for now.
I’ve found families walking four abreast on pavements generally move aside if asked. I’ve had to stop/walk a few times to avoid running into the road when cars are coming.
I think we’ll have to accept everyone’s needs at this time. It’s good that people are out walking.
As for new shoes, yes probably. They’re supposed to last 500 miles (very rough estimate). I get sore calves running in older shoes, and I’m always amazed when I compare my old shoes with a new pair. It’s not so much the tread, more the compression of the foam soles. Treat yourself to a new pair, and don’t worry about those walkers.
I’m all for accepting everyone’s needs - honestly! And I do think it’s usually easier if I move but at the same time surely it’s not that difficult as long as they’re not elderly, with small children &/or 92 shopping bags for a walker to just step aside once in a while, especially beside a road.
Thanks for advice re shoes, that seems to be the general opinion, tho I’ve just realised there’s precious little I can do about it at the moment!
A very good running shop (The Active Foot Co) near me is doing deliveries. I’m not sure how that works, but full credit to them for being so adaptive.
If you’re happy with your current shoes and they’re available online, that’s an option. Much to my annoyance, though, shoes change every year, and the next in the series might not be suitable. I was very happy with Brooks GTS 18 and got through two pairs. They went out of production so I tried the obvious Brooks GTS 19, and they were a totally different shape. Only buy online if you know the shoe well. In normal times, I’d say support your local running shop as those places are great 👍
It is quite difficult at the moment, particularly in built up areas. But I think we all just need to do our best and try to respect one another. I had an incident at 6.30am earlier this week where a cyclist just cycled towards me on the tow path and I had to quickly step aside into undergrowth. But I'm trying hard not to be impatient or cross and just accept our lives are not normal at the moment.
We probably need to rein in some of our targets etc while having to slow down or stop to allow for the distancing measures and just enjoy running in a different way.
I’m a triathlete so do running and cycling 😀 but I still hate cyclists. A lot of them are just dim in both meanings of the word. I rarely cycle on the road but when I do I look like I’ve been dipped in dayglo. What are these people thinking when they cycle on the road clad head to foot in black!
