. Doctor says I need to rest - gutted as was really getting into it. I haven't been going fast, have invested in good running shoes so any tips for when I can get back to it to avoid shin splints again :0(

Completed second run of week 4 yesterday but shins are really sore today and have been having some knee pain.

dont go back until you are fully recovered as you could risk further injury that takes you out of running longer (tough lesson learnt personally after thinking that the pain would go away once the muscles had warmed up!) not shin splints but knee pain.
if you are running outdoors perhaps find grass to run on as opposed to paths. this is supposed to be gentler.
