Shin pain. New runner.

Largerthaneverest profile image

So I am about to start wk2 run1 and found I had shin splints last week. Any tips? I have splashed out on proper trainers but last week I struggled with the pain in my shins. What is that??

Can’t wait to smash this week preferably without any further pain

Congrats on starting week 2, try slowing down and taking shorter strides, maybe you're landing on your heel, aim to land midfoot and with your foot beneath you, hope that helps 💪👊

If you're going to smash it, smash it really slowly! Take small strides and make sure your feet land under your hips, rather than 'grabbing ' the road in front of you.

There are lots of stretching exercises pinned on the forum. It's best to do them as soon as you get back while your muscles are still warm. Epsom salt baths and compression socks are supposed to be good, but I've never tried either.

And everything Run-fish-run says about heel striking. Good luck.

Follow the advice in the guide to the plan on minimising impact, stretching and leg strengthening exercises.

Did you have a gait analysis done before buying shoes? If not, they may be wholly inappropriate for your gait.
