Broken leg

I don’t recommend running downstairs! I saved seconds which led to a tibial plateau fracture. No surgery but non-weight bearing and a hinged leg brace for nine weeks. My leg muscles are shrinking but on the other hand, my core and arm muscles are getting a good work out on crutches. This time last year I was about to start the Couch to 5k and achieved it. Back to square one I wonder? Anyone been in my situation who can give me a glimmer of hope?

Sorry you had an accident that resulted in your injury. Hope you get better soon 😊

Brace off in January then see how it goes.

Ouch! You have done it once so you know it is do-able. Just take it slow and trust the programme - again!

Learn to walk first, then bit by bit....

Oh sympathy & hugs winging to you. 😘

I’m sure there is hope, but take advice from the medics who are looking after you, when your leg is healed. 😄

Yes, physio will be the way to go.

Absolutely & when the time comes he/ she will be able to advise you about how & when to run. 😄

Gosh, I've never seen anything like that, do you have to wear it at night? Looks so uncomfortable... gentle hugs and sympathy.

Yes, kept on at night. Not too bad actually - got used to it now after six weeks - three more to go. Used to being busy and active so have lost my independence. My husband has been FANTASTIC. I truly appreciate everything he does to help. He has always been a runner and now coaches as well as working full time, being my chauffeur, cleaning, cooking etc. (In fact, this broken leg thing could be a ploy to being waited on hand and foot!) I owe him big time!!!

Oh no! Poor you. 6 weeks healing already under your belt - that's brilliant. If you have a look at my previous posts you'll see I had to have 4 months non-running this year due to a stress fracture. It sucked! Prior to that I was running to half marathon.

I did start back at the beginning - C25K W1R1. But it wasn't exactly square one. I didn't repeat all 27 runs, but made a judgement after each run about which one I would do next. I had a 10k race already booked so only had a limited time to get back to 10k, and that was a major driver in which runs I decided to do. To be honest, if I hadn't had that 'pressure' I might have repeated the whole program in full. I enjoyed each and every run I did - it was (and still is) an absolute joy to be back out there. Take your time! Enjoy it and don't take any risks.

Once the brace is off, it will take time building up your muscles again - foot, ankle and leg. This will all need to be done before you can start running. Be diligent with your exercises, listen to your physio and you will be back out there.

In the meantime, keep your core and upper body toned. I can recommend Caroline Jordan videos on you tube - lots of non-weight bearing routines for now, and rehab routines for later.

Wishing you all the very best for a speedy comeback!

Thanks for the advice. I will take a look at those videos. At least using the crutches is toning my arms - lifting my body weight many times a day must count for something.

I fractured my tibia falling down the stairs. It took a good 6 months to get back to almost normal.

I am doing week 6 of the C25k and the fracture hasn’t stopped me.

Hopefully you will be the same.

I feel your physiological pain, as I hated not being able to get on with things. Get well soon.

Yes, I am not in any physical pain so I count myself lucky there. It is just plain frustrating. I will NEVER run down the stairs EVER again!!!
