Saw the weather this morning and thought it was a great day for a run... 5 miles from my local park and mainly uphill because... well, why not?!

Light lunch and a brew then off I went. As I arrived at the park the heavens opened... I changed into my shoes and waited a few minutes to see if it would ease slightly... it got harder! Nothing else for it, it was time to try and warm up... miserable walking out of the back of the park and up the road to my trail... finally it was time to run. I could have swapped for my 2 mile run and I nearly did... but then I thought about all the posts I’ve been replying too, how some people are struggling to get to the end of 60 seconds, 5 minutes or even those first longer ones... that was all the inspiration I needed... at half way the rain eased off nicely. I got into my comfort zone and the run became a delight. Into the last mile and my coach says I have to think about someone who inspired me and run the next bit for them... so I ran it for all the C25Kers and graduates on here. Next I had to think about the next hour and what I’d eat and drink... no brainer... cider and a couple of pickled eggs! Didn’t want to the run to end... and just as it did the rain almost stopped... walked back down in light drizzle, looking like a drowned rat, and grinning like a madman!

5 miles... Almost one hour... 3371 feet of elevation. I make that last bit almost exactly 1km of up and down, and to think I used to fear the hills!

Thanks for keeping me going out there today. Happy running.

Go that man...! We are all we need to get by , aren't we ??? This forum rocks!!!

PS

I got soaked here in Criccieth and gave up at 2 K....waterlogged shell!!! :)

UnfitNoMore profile image
UnfitNoMoreGraduate in reply toOldfloss

We certainly are. 😀

Hope the shell dries out well... the torrential rain was not fun! There’s always another run too.

Hi oldfloss, Welsh rain is particularly wet 😁 (took me six months to dry out when I moved away) Are you in Criccieth for the green Man?

Oldfloss profile image

Ha ha....Welsh rain..

Where is that festival...is that the one in Crickhowell..

I have a holiday home here in Criccieth. ..so am pretty used to the wetness..

Oops yes South Wales girl here getting my Criccieth and Crickhowell mixed up 😂😂 Criccieth is beautiful though.

Fantastic story! This forum is the best! 👏🏻

It sure is... this place and Kate Bush singing about running up that hill got me up there today.

Jazzyrunner profile image
JazzyrunnerGraduate in reply toUnfitNoMore

Ooh yes, that’s another good one for the playlist! Though I do still avoid the faintest hint of a hill, I must admit 😂

UnfitNoMore profile image
UnfitNoMoreGraduate in reply toJazzyrunner

I surprised myself when I decided to run this one today... I avoided hills for a long time. Figured as I’d lost nearly a month at the start of my HM plan then a good hill run would help the muscles catch up... foam rolling to look forward to now!

Great work UNM! We all inspire each other on here which makes it a fab place to be.😊🙂👍

Thanks. I don’t know what I’d do without this place... less running for sure

grumpyoldgirl profile image
grumpyoldgirlGraduate

What an epic, UNM! That was a hard earned 5 miles. I went out in the rain but managed to miss the worst of it by some fluke. Stopped sharpish on the 5k mark though! Also didn't dream of pickled eggs 🤢

UnfitNoMore profile image
UnfitNoMoreGraduate in reply togrumpyoldgirl

Eggs are my go to post run protein as a veggie... and picked ones are just wonderful with cider!

Great job getting the 5k done today... the rain is refreshing but I don’t always like starting in it... the best rain starts at about the half way point for me, today it was completely the opposite of perfect for me.

grumpyoldgirl profile image
grumpyoldgirlGraduate in reply toUnfitNoMore

I'm being totally prejudiced, I like eggs, but I haven't even tried a pickled one. Just no! 😄

UnfitNoMore profile image
UnfitNoMoreGraduate in reply togrumpyoldgirl

I also have pickled walnuts and garlic... yum.

I always grin like a madman too when I run in the rain. Its the thought of what i must look like to non-runners- they probably think I'm insane🤪

And this forum is certainly inspirational, I don't know that I would still be running if it wasn't for these guys 🏃‍♂️🏃‍♀️

UnfitNoMore profile image
UnfitNoMoreGraduate in reply toTartancat

The non runners think we’re a bit crazy just for running, so yeah in the rain we must be clinically insane.

I would still run some I think if this place was gone, but I don’t think I’d do more than a couple of 30 minutes a week.

Despite the rain, well done on your run today, thank you for running and thinking of all of us C25K's and graduates, after the run I hope you enjoyed your cider and pickled eggs, you certainly deserved them after that soaking you got during the run, 5 miles, that's about 8K.

Next Wednesday as part of my 1 kilometre a run more a week between parkruns I am going to run a 8K, it should have been today, but I decided to only do a short run today, I'll leave the 8K to next Wednesday.

UnfitNoMore profile image
UnfitNoMoreGraduate in reply toAlMorr

Cider and eggs superb! Think 5 miles is 8.045k or thereabouts! The Nike guided 5 miler is great. You’re gonna love that 8k next Wednesday... think it’s down as my long run day too next week.

AlMorr profile image
AlMorrAmbassadorGraduate in reply toUnfitNoMore

Whisper, whisper, but there is this possibility meetup at the Giants Causeway with Irish John next year, now I don't know if it will come to anything or not, if it does, I don't want to be the only person there who has not ran a 10K, so this year I have been gradually increasing one kilometer a week, next week its a 8K, the day I ran a 6K my time was about 44 minutes, 7K, about 51 minutes, so the metromone app set at 162 steps a minute I think 8K will be around a hour, if I manage a hour, it will be my longest run ever. 😊 🏃

UnfitNoMore profile image
UnfitNoMoreGraduate in reply toAlMorr

You’ll have many a 10k behind you by then. I’m looking forward to it, just hoping I can get there now.

I put a windproof on this morning. It was nowhere near cold enough but I couldn’t face the wind and rain while warming up.

The rain stopped but the wind kept up so I kept it on and pretended I was somewhere hot again.

Haven’t had a pickled egg for a while.

UnfitNoMore profile image
UnfitNoMoreGraduate in reply toSlowLoris

Luckily my rain was vertical today, not much of a breeze here! Good way to get warm weather training in without the trip!

There’s generally a jar of eggs in the car... sometimes that post run bite can’t wait!

SlowLoris profile image
SlowLoris in reply toUnfitNoMore

Must be tricky eating the egg, drinking from the cider flagon and writing this post on your mobile, all whilst driving home is the rain.

I too modelled the drowned rat look today!

Only went out for a 25 minute run (trying out different runs on the Nike Run Club app) - and it was dry when I set off, but I knew what was forecast, so it came as no surprise to me when it started raining about half way through! 💧🌨🏃‍♀️

UnfitNoMore profile image
UnfitNoMoreGraduate in reply toCookieM

Well done getting out there in the wet. Which run did you do? I do love the guided runs, hadn’t done one for a while as most of my runs are on my watch now, and that feeds into NRC for my stats... but I remembered how great the 5 mile run was the first time around so I just had to.

CookieM profile image
CookieMGraduate in reply toUnfitNoMore

I did the Easy Run - having tried the 15 minute Comeback run on Sunday. Having only recently re-graduated, I'm not doing anything longer than 30 minutes at the moment, but just trying out different things, including this app as a friend recommended the Headspace runs to me (haven't tried those yet!).

UnfitNoMore profile image
UnfitNoMoreGraduate in reply toCookieM

The headspace ones are exceptional... I wish they’d do some distance based ones while I’m on a plan though... they’ll be the ones I use after my HM to ease back in after a little break. I saw the easy run before I got to C25K... 25 minutes easy? I laughed then and still now, for different reasons.

You’re doing the right thing... 30 minutes for a while, maybe with some shorter ones playing with pace and you’ll find more gears and get stronger ready for 10k if you want to go there.

CookieM profile image
CookieMGraduate in reply toUnfitNoMore

My first goal once I'm completely comfortable with 30 minutes is to extend to 5k (current max is 3.5k). It will be a while before I aim for 10k or a HM (though I would love to do one in the future!).

I'll try a Headspace one next time :)

UnfitNoMore profile image
UnfitNoMoreGraduate in reply toCookieM

It’ll all come to you in time... the hardest bit is getting started. I’ve done the 10k thing and that road was easier than the one to 5k. When you’re ready, ju-ju-‘s magic 10k plan also has a timed version to get you from 30 to 60 minutes, which would bag the 5k and then some! Only one run a week goes long so it’s easy to fit around life... and the timed version is very much guided run compatible.

CookieM profile image
CookieMGraduate in reply toUnfitNoMore

Thanks! I'll bear that in mind :)

You are very certainly not UnfitNoMore, with that run. You always make an effort to encourage others so a big thanks to you! Maybe a new name could be IRunHills or PickledEggsRock 😊😊

Living amongst the hills but not running them was an issue... every time I leave the house they’re there calling me, so today’s run needed to be done... and many more similar ones to come.

Not sure on the name change idea... I’d probably forget it was me and reply 🤣

It’s certainly in my top 5 runs so far... great fun once I’d stopped the voice in my head that was telling me to just switch to the 2 mile and run the 5 on Friday. I’m now considering doing this run the other way, should be able to bag PBs all the way as it’d be very much a downhill run!

SueAppleRun profile image
SueAppleRunGraduate in reply toUnfitNoMore

Its so great to just be able to run isn’t it? and to read about others successes spurs us on

Enjoy the more downhill run

It sure is... I love the headspace that it brings and the way it gives me energy for all the other things I do in life. The Mrs isn’t so keen on my rest days though, I get a little restless 🤣

SueAppleRun profile image
SueAppleRunGraduate in reply toUnfitNoMore

Ha ha we often talk about going for a run on rest days I’m impatient to get to the next run

We come back buzzing with energy and i get loads more done around the house after a run

It certainly clears your head of all the stuff that builds up in there
