I WILL graduate on Thursday and have done all my training outdoors. My lovely friend will graduate too but in the allotted 30 mins she can cover 5.2k on her treadmill. I know I'm 12 minutes short of completing 5k in 30 mins (coz a kept on going today, 5k in 42.26mins). Is indoor running that much different or or am I just lots less fit than my younger buddy?
Outside v treadmill: I WILL graduate on Thursday... - Couch to 5K
Outside v treadmill
It is different.
Outside is a bit harder (I graduated on treadmill).
However, I am slow inside and out : )
I've only used a treadmill post graduation... but I found it an awful lot easier. I managed 5k in just over 20 mins at a 3% incline. I was pounding that thing but even so... it comes down to how accurate the calibration is. I've no idea as it was a hotel machine. I found the bounce of the belt made it super easy to run faster and not having kerbs/ anything to dodge... child's play. My best outdoor 5k is about 26.5 mins.
You're both achieving something great but I'd say you have the edge, especially if you actually want to go places 👍🏻😉
Not sure why but outside running is a bit harder. Not than I've ever ran on one , I have read a lot of posts on here about people on the treadmill then transferring to outside 😊
Pace control is the biggest difference and can take time to adapt either way. A treadmill is closest to a running track and in that respect is, in terms of energy expenditure, a little easier than running on tarmac, and this increases with softness... sand can be very tough when dry.
Also, treadmills vary in their reported distance... your friend may or may not be running 5k, and without calibration there’s no way to know for sure.
We all start at different fitness levels... and past a peak of maybe 18-30 age is a factor... but there’s so many other factors involved that we can’t predict which of you would be the quickest at peak fitness, which can take years to build. Don’t worry about it... you’ll be able to run together.
Ah not worried about it in any way UnFitNoMore, my buddy is great and she's an inspiration to me on so much more than C25K. It was just a genuine interest to learn the difference. I've never been a gym goer other than for aerobics classes and swimming many years ago but I've done more than my fair share of athletics (sprinter) so it's always been fresh air for me. Thanks for your answer.
You might be running up hill more than on the treadmill 😁
Who cares? I can’t run 5k in 30 minutes 🤷♀️
