Week 6 and I have hip pain...gutted as I feel I was making progress!

I’m surprisingly enjoying doing the C25K (even though it has challenged me and never thought I’d do it), but when I was running last night I had a pain in my hip and I just kept running determined to finish my first wk 6 run! I was over the moon when I finished but in agony and limping since! Not sure what or how I’ve caused this pain. But don’t know whether to continue (as I’m determined to complete the program and I thoroughly enjoy it especially when I complete each run) or have a break to hopefully ease the pain. It feels muscular, more of a bruise than a joint. Really gutted and tempted to see if I can still run?!

Do not run through pain at all.. Is the pain in your hip or your buttock... ?

Rest up and try some loosening exercises to maybe ease the ##pain?

Thank you! Really disappointed (prior to this I’d give any excuses to get out exercise)! It’s in my hip, it feels bruised. I’ve been a bit stiff getting from my chair (feeling like I’m old..but I’m 34) and when climbing stairs it’s like touching a bruise. Not sure what I’ve done 😢

Best get checked out... maybe GP or a sports physio' if you think your hip pain generates from a running injury.

Definitely no running until the pain has gone . Maybe some walking to keep your joints loose 😊

Damn... ok... sometimes we need to push through to finish the run... when it’s pain causing that run to be tough, not so much.

I gotta say a couple of things... firstly, I’m proud of you for not having any quit in that run... it could be a new runner mistake, but your mental strength is proven and then some. My second thing would be to avoid all temptation to go see if you can still run... the agony says that you can’t, listen to that.

Hopefully we are in the zone of “that hurt, I need a couple of days off” rather than an injury that will keep you out longer. What you need to do is rest, maybe ice, and do some active recovery (like walking) if pain free doing that. Test the hip in a few days with some “open the gate” exercises and similar and see how it reacts... if there’s pain, you’re not running... that’s the smart choice... sometimes the best run is no run. If it hurts at this stage persistently, go see a physio.

You got this... if running risks going back to the start in a couple of months then that’s a risk not worth taking... most injuries will heal in a few days or a couple of weeks if given the care they need and that means you’ll be able to resume where you left off.

Hope this helps... my hat is off to you for the balls shown on today’s run... save that for race day in future though! I hope to see you back soon.

Thank you. I’ll walk for a couple of days and a generally rest (I’m so disappointed and annoyed)! I’ll try ice too. Really appreciate your advice and hopefully I’ll be telling you soon, I’m back running 🤞

Ice it lots! You can get good ice packs for injuries. I had something similar and had to stop for about 4 weeks. I kept icing it and putting ibuprofen gel on it for the inflammation x

Brill, going to put ice on it, rest and use ibuprofen gel. Thank you, really appreciate your advice.

Might be worth checking with your GP in case it’s bursitis, it can happen with new repetitive movements such as starting to run. They’ll be able to give you good advice re treatment if it is.

Thank you. I’ll have a couple of days rest and maybe see my GP

I have exactly the same problems with my hip at W7R2 and have had three days off so far. Desperate to complete the programme but the advice has been to rest and I’m seeing a sports physio next week....hoping it’s something that will improve with time. Good luck with your recovery, it’s very frustrating!

I understand how gutted you feel - I broke my toe in week 3 and so then had six weeks without running (or even walking tbh).

BUT... I started again (went right back to the beginning of the programme) and found it much easier than the first time - guess it's muscle memory and all that... but just to say hold your nerve, you will be back out there when your body is ready - listen to the pain it's telling you something.

Good luck :)

I had this a few weeks ago, pushed through the pain for another run and it was a big mistake..ouch!!! I was advised to rest from running for a week and do some yoga for runners (I’m a yoga fan but I’m sure stretching would do the same). Anyway, it worked brilliantly and I was back out on week 5 run 3 yesterday with no pain. My physio buddy suggested looking at the bottom of my shoes for wear to assess gait. It seems I roll my feet out (there’s names for it to do with pronation - can’t remember which one rolling out is). I bought gel insoles from amazon to correct this (much cheaper than new trainers). It’s definitely more comfortable with them in. Good luck, hopefully you’ll be back out there soon!!! X

Thank you, I’m really grateful! I didn’t know there was such a thing as yoga for runners. I’ll have a look online.

This may be nothing like what you have but I've had what I believe to be inflamation of the hip bursa on my left hip. Felt uncomfortable when walking, especially up stairs, and to lay on in bed, tender to touch as if bruised. I read that bursas are little sacs of fluid to protect the area but if over used and not used to it, can rub and get sore. I decided to try ibuprofen and some exercises to help ease the area (IT band stretches I found online). Luckily for me that eased things within a few days and I now do them before a run, and after along with my warm down stretches which has really helped. Take care though and listen to your body as I know bursitis is worse and not so easily tackled. Good luck 🤨

That sounds exactly like mine, burised to touch, pain when walking and feel it more going up stairs! It wakes me up if I lay on it. Reassuring that it does get better. I will look up IT band stretches too. Thank you so much really appreciate your advice!

You're very welcome. The exercises I do were on google under 7 IT band stretches on prevention.com, there were pictures so I screenprinted them though I only do 4 or 5 of them coz a couple were weird positions! Hope it helps 👍

Yes as others have said I would get it checked out. I got pain in my Iliopsoas after getting to the end of week 3, I googled it ( not always a good thing I know) and found that its common in runner and athletes, which sort of made me feel a bit better) How ever I now do stretches before running ( I didn't before ) and I do take regular anti inflammatories and it has almost gone. However that said, given that it is in our hip it wouldn't hurt to get it looked at. I rambled then sorry !!!

Let is know how you get on!!

x

Optimistic0 profile image

Didn’t ramble at all. Thank you, I really appreciate it! It’s reassuring that others have experienced this. I don’t do stretches before I run, just the brisk walk. I will look some up, once it heals (I hope it does soon)!
