Breathing Difficulties

Just finished week 2 and really chuffed. However I am really struggling to breath at some points. My chest feels really tight and gasping. I also get a lot of Phlegm (sorry if this is an over share) during and for a long time after. I know I am unfit but it just doesn’t feel right. I am making a real effort to breath through nose and out through mouth and this helps a little bit. Anyone have any experience of this?

When are you running is it really cold at the time? Do you get asthma or hay fever allergies. If none of the above then I suggest you go at a slower pace and let your breathing relax a bit more. Remember to relax as much as you can look around you and enjoy scenery. I can’t breathe through my nose once running and I make a lot of noise but that’s me. We are all different. If none of that helps maybe you have a cold coming? Do you smoke? Or is it just plain old fashioned getting fit again and you’re not used to it? Either way look after yourself. Good luck and well done you 😄

Thanks for the advise, I appreciate it. It was pretty cold tonight. I don’t have asthma and don’t smoke so maybe once things progress it will get better?

I would have thought so but if in doubt seek medical advise. It’s good that it hasn’t stopped you!

Years ago too many to think of now I was at the peak of my fitness and wanted my speed of running to go up a notch. I just never had the breath to do it so I sort help. That’s when I found out I was asthmatic! Not that it stopped me right meds and I was away again. NOT that I am in anyway saying this is you, but if in doubt ... 👍

Are you running at an easy conversational pace, as described in the guide to the plan ?healthunlocked.com/couchto5...

If you cannot speak clearly as you run, then you are going too fast.

Forget about breathing in through your nose. I give this advice in the guide along with the general breathing advice to stop thinking about breathing. You do it every day without thinking.

Just remember, if you cannot breathe fully, slow down.

Relax.
