I did my first ever run the other day in a pair of knackered old ‘fashion’ trainers. It was actually fine but I was on grass and wasn’t exactly going hell for leather!
I then got over eager and bought a pair of running shoes from my local nike factory shop. I completely forgot about the gait checking thing and am wondering if it’s a mistake to go out in the new shoes today? I did explain that I was new to running and that I’d be running on a variety of surfaces. The shop assistant assured me the shoes were appropriate for my needs and made sure I had space at end of my feet.
They’re lovely trainers and were frankly a bargain (£25 from RRP £125!). With the brand and the original price I assume they must be reasonably well engineered.
Should I just go for it?

Nike don’t subscribe to gait analysis theory... the odd store has a treadmill hidden away somewhere so you can test those shoes. You should be fine in very comfortable running shoes. Gait analysis is debated, it certainly helps people feel more comfortable, but doesn’t reduce injury... even runners world are advising to choose on comfort now.
I also had an old pair of trainers which hurt the top of my foot. Never did a gait analysis like most people here, but just got a cheap pair of ASICS running shoes suitable for beginners which have been great. Actually the expensive ones which I tried on seemed uncomfortable too hard on the sides.
Brilliant, thanks. I had a suspicion that plenty of people got on fine without gait analysis but it’s good to have it confirmed! These shoes seems very comfy so I’ll give it a go.
Great to know about FAQ posts - I’ll look them up as I have a lot to learn!
I went for a run earlier and the new shoes seemed good - I’m only on week one run 2 though so I’m hardly pushing them to the limit yet. Obviously if I have trouble or start doing long distances I’ll have another look at shoe buying.
It was a Nike store I bought them from, it’s their factory shop in Hackney hence the price as they’re old stock. In fact they currently have a bargain section of shoes at 50% of the already reduced price which is how mine were so cheap!
