Just wanted to share that I’ve lost 5kg (11 pounds) since I started running.
I’m now just under 94kg or 14st 7lbs. Calorie counting using My Fitness Pal has been a big part of this. It’s been slow and hard and not continuous drops by any means.
If this is part of your aim, stick at it.

That’s brilliant and it’s good to hear someone else whose using MFP to track those calories down. I too am finding it very hard to shift the last 5kg I need to stop the nhs worrying about me so it’s good to hear from someone else who’s also rising to the challenge! 👍
Well done Jay, the mantra of C25K is as you know 'slow and steady' that also applies to weight loss as well, you are doing really well in that department, you'll get there soon.
Well done and make sure you check out the men’s success stories on SlimmingWorld! Some fantastic transformations and health turnarounds. The joy of SW is you can still fill up on plenty of tasty food and typically men do even better than women at losing the pounds! I’ve got at least half a stone to lose before daughters wedding in 8 weeks 🙈
Well done Jay, you are a brilliant representation of what Healthunlocked is all about and the changes that can be achieved if someone really goes for it. 👏
Hi jay very well done I lost 3st before doing c25k, then while doing the c25k I haven’t lost a thing because I’ve been concentrating so hard on putting one foot in front of the other. Now I’ve graduated I know I’ve got to lose that last couple of stone and you have inspired me. So are you using MFP to count calories but making your own diet plan so to speak. Thanks
Yeah. I’m told that my old school ways of low fat everything are wrong (cos they just use sugar instead for flavour) so it’s a struggle. I can’t really afford Slimming World etc and don’t massively enjoy the intimacy of that sort of situation.
Main thing is cutting back on carbs and that is so hard - I love bread, pasta, rice.
I have a bookshelf full of cookbooks, lots of them healthy eating, and I need to invest some time finding recipes I fancy.
You can do SlimmingWorld on your own Jay. I don’t like group either. GPs also support it and can refer you for free 😊A basic 6 week’s course usually has an introductory offer to get you started so you learn the basics and get the book. And you can eat pasta, rice and potatoes but limited bread. There’s been a lot of myth busting around carbs recently too as people think you have to avoid them to lose weight. I don’t work for them or anything it’s just by far the most successful I’ve seen and most importantly it’s sustainable as it’s based on proper food. Agree about some low fat products- either sugar or sweetener in them. Stuck to 0% natural yoghurt or fromage frais and put your own flavour in it such as fruit. I also make my own dips using herbs, garlic etc. Anyway each to their own, just trying to help as I’m a strong believer that fad diets don’t work. I like food and it works for me.
Thanks for the advice. I should look into it. I was a member of their online thing several years ago but there were no books and it was just impossible to figure out what I should do.
Need support initially to get how it works. Often people have a book lying around that they no longer use. Perhaps there’s someone could pass one on? I don’t really use mine now as I know the rules. Tend to make up my own recipes but there’s an app too which I use if I need inspiration or to remember how to make the carbonara which I always forget!!! My OH, who doesn’t need to lose but likes to maintain a healthy weight eats the same as me but just adds any extras he wants if I’m not allowed them 😳
Oh it’s fine honestly 😄 it’s more things like olive oil and extra bread rather than cakes etc. He does eat a lot more cheese than me though and stays slim which is most unfair
Well done, keep at it Jay, the calorie counting/running combo seems to definately be working for you, so just keep doing what your doing.
I dropped about 8.6kg (19lbs) since starting the running in April combined with my own "sensible" made up diet. My end target is to get slap bang in the middle of the Healthy Weight/BMI range for my height which still gives me another 15kg (33lbs) to go. As with running, slow and steady is the way to go, so who knows, this time next year maybe😉
Well done. I don’t massively care how long it takes but I am conscious of the belly.
I want to start going out a bit with a hope to eventually meeting someone to spend the future with, but as I am at the moment I just feel too fat to be attractive. I know that’s gremlins but it destroys confidence. I feel I will be more confident if I am comfortable with how I look.
More advice! Dating... Late 2015 after fedupness of being generally happy but single and 2 marriages behind me I joined match.com. Best thing I ever did. After 3 months of dates with some decent men, just not right for me or I them, I met my current partner and have never been happier. You have to do some sifting and sorting (preferably before you agree to a date) and you need to feel ready. There’s life to be had after divorce and after 50. You are doing the right things to get healthier and the right partner will support and encourage that. Dating is also fun 😄 but eventually you just want to get settled and as you say, build the future. You seem a normal, genuine bloke so I’m sure you’ll be fine. Good luck with everything Jay
Makes perfect sense Jay. I think we all share those same insecurities in ourselves even if those around don't view us in the same harsh way. As they say we are our own worst critics. My main concern as with a lot of men is the belly, I'm thinking more core work on none running days is probably the answer.
Well done .slow and steady is best . I've lost slightly less since starting but works for me . I set my target in 5 pound chunks which seems to also work . Good luck .
Great going, Jay! Slow and steady will win the day! 😃❤️
I lost 1.5 stone about a year or so ago, having been gradually creeping up in weight as I got older. I found eating more whole foods and protein, and not as many carbs, seemed to help me, but we’re all different. (I also developed a bit of an addiction to smoothies, and rarely don’t have my new Nutri Ninja fired up making them at least once a day! Need to keep a steady supply of frozen bananas going, though, or I start to get withdrawal symptoms!)
If it’s any reassurance, I found that once I’d lost the weight I wanted to, and stayed as active, my weight stayed pretty consistent, and I could be more flexible with what I ate. (I pretty much eat on demand when I’m hungry now.) Even when I was trying to lose weight, though, I stuck to my preferred 80:20 rule of diets (ie aim to eat what you should 80% of the time, but give yourself 20% to eat as you like, which they say makes you more likely to stick to a diet, and not binge if you slip slightly. With that in mind, my one Galaxy bar of chocolate per day has never been negotiable at any point! 😂😂😂)
😂😂 Think that was how I’d gradually gained weight in the first place...my chocolate addiction had one chocolate bar a day often becoming 2, then sometimes “oh what the heck” it turned into 3...😍🍫🍫🍫🙄☹️
OK then...now repeat after me...ONLY EAT ONE TREAT PER DAY until I’m the weight I want to be!!! 🙄 (Then you can do what you want as long as you run the excess off!) 😂👍❤️
Well done Jay!! Inspired by you men losing weight I am on a healthy eating plan while on the bench and have started with the NHS Weight Loss, printed out my weekly sheets and weighed myself 😭 and as I can’t stand in my kitchen and bake ( my usual downfall) and I can’t get to the shops to buy sweeties I’m hoping to lose some weight.
Hi Jay 66, good stuff, you must be very pleased. I started with slimming world and lost about 6kg, then started C25K and have lost another 5kg. So now instead of loosing I need to try and gain - very difficult , just can’t win 😱. But I’m happy with my new shape and my new fitness level so it’s a win win - yippee! 🙃
It will happen, just keep on running 🏃♂️, and counting those dull calories! Luckily I don’t like beer/lager and can live without wine, all empty calories but I do like a g’n’t 🙃 and chocolate 🍫!
Hi Jay! Well done on doing so well with the weight loss, and with your running too. Those 5ks are starting to become regular and I'm sure you'll be well on track for your 10k target. Reading all your progress over the last couple of weeks in a short space of time it struck me how much you have achieved. If you continue in that vein you'll get where you want to be, I'm absolutely sure of it. Also very inspiring for everyone else too
Brilliant Jay thats a great loss well done you. Its so tough losing weight. You’ve inspired me to do something about mine. Been in denial for too long, my daughter who poor thing has my genes and jeans now lost 18kg not eating pasta, rice, bread or potatoes, but she doesn’t exercise, although I’m finding running a struggle now, only managing one day a week now because the weather is so bad here, finished week four but have had to give up on my 10k plan for now. This forum is keeping me going at the moment. 🥝 Go you!
Thanks for the encouragement. I’m trying as well, and I’ve been very discouraged this week. But I’ve tweaked my program, made some necessary changes (no, and I mean NO wine 😂😂), and I think this will get the scale moving. Your post was just what I needed to read tonight!!
Just catching up here Jay. You're already doing a great job on yourself and inspiring others too! Keep going.
SW is a good system. You should give it a go as it allows you to monitor staying on plan and some things you can eat loads of. Question: have you tried giving up the beer? No not forever, but I notice if I chuck the beer for a month the weight just drops off me.
I don't mean forever, just as a short term motivation!
Just adding my congratulations to everyone else’s Jay - it’s brilliant - and your new confidence will help so much with getting back out there and meeting new people. The harmful fat around the organs is the first to shift, I’m told, so even if you still have fat under your skin you’ll still be improving your health no-end. I’ve tried all sorts of diet clubs and systems over the last 30 years and they’ve all helped at the time, but I still ended up obese for most of my 40’s. My weight was always a symptom of my mental state, had BED and bouts of anxiety and depression since 16 years old, and stress has physical impacts regarding blood sugar levels and fat mobilisation - so that doesn’t help either. There’s been such a lot of research into the impacts of what we eat and the physiology. Anyone who still insists losing weight is simply eating less and moving more doesn’t understand jack-sh*t about it (and are likely to never have been fat themselves!) and people who think we are a drain on the country’s tax payers forgets how much money we’ve probably spent on the ‘diet industry’ and gym memberships trying to sort ourselves out and failing - which all generate tax! Anyway, I’ll get off my soapbox now 🤣 Have a good weekend 👏👍🏼
Great stuff Jay, very similar story here as posted before. Weight loss seems to have plateaued a bit recently, so am trying to focus a bit more on it again to get it restarted.
Good luck with it. As your weight drops you need to cut your daily calories a bit to keep losing. Try knocking 200 cals off your daily allowance and see if it helps.
