Hello all! Summer running is a challenge folks but we can do it! I love this photo above.....wouldnβt it be a great place for an early evening run?π. But, in the heat of summer, remember to plan carefully and hydrate well at all times.
So, welcome all to the second week in June of βWhat is your week?β
Whatsβs the idea of, "What is your Week?β.
Well every week I am going to put up a post, so you can add in a little post underneath, to say what week you are planning to do this week.
Sample post (feel free to put as much or as little as you like):
βHi, I'm Millsie-J and this week, I am doing the milestone Week 6 runs. Feeling a little nervous, any tips folks? β
We are growing so much at the moment and we wanted to have a little fun post ,so we can see who is on what week of the programme, and hopefully it will help everyone to feel more included on the forum.
Please remember it doesn't matter if you stay on the same week for a while, that is fine; it is a journey and it really doesn't matter how long it takes, it will be so worth it when you get to the final run.
If you have just graduated, this will also be a great place to keep you motivated, there is always the Quest on the Bridge to 10k forum as well, for Graduates.
I will add all the names from this week under this post. Then every week for the month of June the names will roll over into another post. Anyone can join in at any time.
Let's get a good list going so we can support each other throughout the month, and get another month of running miles in our legs!
(Come on you lurkers, we would love you to come join us too)!
Big triumph was doing a park run on Saturday - have done them before but most recent one was 3.5 years ago. Is a new one so my time was a PB for that course anyway, but did it in 30:28 which felt pretty good π now to finish the programme and get down to under 30 minutes for 5k π
Also good that you did a Parkrun, they are such great fun! At this early stage take care extending time running and also running at pace, loads of time for that once you have built your running legs further. ππΌππΌββοΈππ»
I know my running legs can do it - am a serial c25ker π think for me a lot of the battle is mental rather than physical. I havenβt felt completely worn out at the end of any of my runs yet so I know I can go faster (but also means I can feel pleased I have achieved every run too)
Just finished week 5, first thing this morning and must admit I am pretty pleased with myself after completing the 20 minute run. So due to start week 6 run 1 on Wednesday, not sure why it goes back to 18 minutes of running comprised of 5 minute, 8 minute and 5 minute runs...? But I am sure there is method in the madness! I have benefited massively from this programme, previously I have always tried to do too much too soon, believing I was still 18 and ended up in pain. The gradual slow increase in time and distance has enabled my legs to slowly get used to the pounding that running any distance causes and now I feel that my legs are much stronger and more able to deal with the stresses of running. The aches and pains are now all starting to disappear and I am looking forward to the final few weeks of the course.
Itβs a great programme for sure, and you are doing great!
Donβt underestimate these next few runs, they do tend to throw a lot of runners. Remember that the walks also take energy so the runs and walk together make it a longer session, the longest so far.
As ever, start slow and stay slow, no medals for speed at this early stage, you just need to get to the finish line. Enjoy ππ½ββοΈππ»
Thanks Millsie-J. The problem I have is that I am too competitive, I always want to push myself harder, unless I am absolutely shattered I can't see the benefit. I must rein that tendency in and have slower more enjoyable runs!
I did W8R2 yesterday- it was one of those runs where I seemed to just glide along & barely noticed I was running - mind went off for it's own little wander round the Universe! If only they could all be like that. W8R3 tomorrow- I know I keep saying it but I really can't believe I have got this far. That podium is getting closer.
Hi, Iβm Tracy and happily consolidating, managed the 5 k along the prom yesterday and did my 30 minuets on the treadmill this morning. Iβm on lates this week so Iβm planning on traveling light and running home Wednesday and Thursday, Itβll b around 10pm so shouldnβt be dark, gotta love the summer, and luckily a couple of kilometres so should be ok. I do try to avoid running consecutive days, heeding as best I can all the fab advice, some weeks it canβt be avoided and so far so good!
Iβm doing W8R3 this week and hope to graduate next week π€. The thing Iβm worried about is actually graduating! Iβm worried Iβll lose motivation after all the wonderful motivation and support Iβve got that brought me this far. Itβs almost like I donβt want to graduate π€·ββοΈ
Its a great achievement to graduate the programme, keep going to the podium so that we can have aother graduation party. Then there is lots to think about, consolidation of 30 mins running.....,then extend and consolidate 5 k. Then there are the 5k+ podcasts: steppingstones, speed and stamina.... each with their own challenge. Parkrun, fun runs, virtual runs. After that there is progression to 10k, not forgetting strength and stamina additional training to support your running.
You can stay on this forum for as long as you want, everyone is welcome! Then when you are ready, join big school on the B2 10k forum, lots of names there you will know.
Also, good to take a look at this for next steps. All so very exciting for a new runner ππ»ββοΈππ»
Iβve just graduated (this morning!) so Iβm planning to reward myself with some frivolous running tech and then get stuck into the consolidation runs. Iβve found the programme and this forum really motivating, so Iβve signed up for the Race for Life in July so I can keep working towards a specific goal. Also planning to try my first Parkrun next weekend!
Iβm due to finish week 3 tomorrow, Iβm thinking I might go and do it on the treadmill mid afternoon rather than out at 5am on the roads tomorrow. Mix it up a little and all that.
Then Iβm really excited to start week 4 on Thursday and hopefully do run 2 after work on Saturday.
Canβt believe Iβm nearly on week 4 already!
Still having a couple of problems with my right leg, so might see how that fairs when running on a treadmill instead.
We (myself and my daughter) will be doing W4 this week. First run tomorrow. Feeling nervous as going from 9 mins of running to 16 π¬ I havenβt told her how much running sheβs got to do this week.
Thanks. Fingers crossed, Iβve been thinking I could do another run when doing the cool down walk but to actually run for 5 mins instead of 3 is really going to push me. I will post how it goes after my run tomorrow night.
Hi, I graduated on Saturday and did my first consolidation run earlier this evening. It didnβt go as well as Iβd hoped, largely due to the heat! π³ππ
I recognise quite a few of the names on the list so can I join your happy band please so we donβt lose touch?! ππ
I did week 7 run 3 today, so this week will be the 28 minutes of week 8. Iβm doing race for life on Sunday. I set myself the challenge of running the whole 5k but feeling nervous about that now...
Thanks π My plan is to take it slow and run until I physically canβt anymore and then walk the rest π currently managing to run 3k in my 25 minutes so weβll see.
Iβll be doing my W6R3 tomorrow. At 61 and never having run before Iβm truly amazed that Iβve gotten this far. So is my family.
Iβve been very sensible ie not running on consecutive days even though Iβve wanted to. I went to get checked out by my GP before I started as well. He was surprised but very supportive and thought it was a great idea.
Iβm loving every minute of it and the advice and support from this forum is fantastic! If I stay on schedule my graduation run should be the first day of our 2 week holiday in Cornwall π running along the coast is fantastic! πββοΈπββοΈπββοΈ
Hi millsie-j ..I did w8r3 yesterday at 5 am ..Don't know why I decided to get up that early (woke and couldn't get back to sleep main reason lol ) but I had a fabulous run ..Everything really smooth and slow managed my 28 minutes ...I have my w9r1 tomorrow ..I am doing my parkrun on Saturday for my graduation ...I am a bit nervous ..But excited too ....Good luck to everyone and happy running ππ
Well i'm on the final week and running towards graduation π. Really really pleased i've made it this far and still can't quite believe it's happened. Run 1 done Monday, run 2 is due tomorrow with run 3 on Friday morning. Fingers crossed all will be well π
W6R1 attempted yesterday, but wasn't feeling great and after 2 minutes, I felt I'd run for an hour, I think was due to being a bit dehydrated. But ran part of the way home from school today and felt ok, so starting w6 again tomorrow
Ok, ok - hands up, Iβve been lurking around for a while enjoying the tips and chit-chat in my early weeks of the programme. Iβve just completed W5R3 and thought Iβd say hello while I enjoy my Aldi granola, dried apricots and a lovely cup of Tetleyβs.
I canβt praise the C25k highly enough. I used to run lots in my 20βs & 30βs but like so many people, family, work and life in general took over. I tried getting going again a few times but always overdid it, got demotivated & stopped again. This programme really works for me!
This week I plan to do W5R3 again on Thursday so I can repeat it with my daughter whoβs visiting us on Saturday. It will be the very first time weβve run together - as a 4 year old she used to dance around with me while I warmed up for training runs. Now sheβs a 28 year old doctor - good to have her on hand if this overweight 58 year old overdoes it. I wonder if sheβs packed her defibrillator...?
Hi Millsie-J, well onto week 5 this week and completed week 5 run 2 last night. For some reason I struggled end of week 4 run 3 with some cramping and stitch so was wary of progress, but this week both runs have been good just some tightness in calf muscles. May take 2 days rest before run 5 /3 though.
Having gradylast Friday Iβve done one run since and plan to do my next tomorrow. And then try a park run on Saturday but a bit apprehensive as Iβm not up to 5k yet (2.7 miles including the warm up and cool down).
Ran 4.1 yesterday evening, having put it off for a day because of tired legs. I made it ok, but it was a bit of a lung buster. No possibility of smugness setting in. New running shoes feeling quite comfortable, having gone through the gait analysis process.
I've just completed week 6 run 1 this morning. Feel fantastic and looking forward to run 2 on Saturday . Get loads of motivation from this forum thanks everyone
Hi, this is week 4 for me. I struggled with the first 5 minute run, and stopped about 10 seconds before the end, but was then determined to finish the next one- which I did. From what I've read, it's the awful first ten minutes thing? Going for run 2 tomorrow, so hopefully it'll be better. Bought new shoes as well, so have to keep it up now - I've never spent so much on a pair of trainers ! (Originally started this is a Β£10 pair from Tescos π±) xx
You would need to start a new post, then go down to the bottom of the screen before you hit the post button ......press the button that says βPhotoβ , select your photo from your libeary , and then make your post ππΌ
Did W7R3 on Tuesday, then a bit disappointed to have to have 3 days off due to old back problems. Managed W8R1 carefully yesterday, though, and hoping to do W8R2 tomorrow morning. The end doesnβt seem too far off now!
Iβm already plotting to move onto 10k after a few weeks of consolidation... I never dreamt 5k would be a possibility for my spine a few weeks ago (I donβt think my Chiro or Sports Therapist did either), but C25k definitely works, and the slow and cautious approach it takes seems to be winning! πβ€οΈπββοΈπββοΈπ
