Given up the fight.

Husband has long been a runner (10k & half marathons) & is a member of a fantastic club. The club totally accept me as a non-runner and make me feel welcome. For the past 4 yrs they have encouraged (not pressurised) me to take up running but I resisted for no real reason. Now I have given up the fight with myself and signed up for couch to 5k. I have bought some proper running shoes in the hope that the expense will spur me on. It is my secret until I can turn up and run with them on a training run. I'm secretly excited but nervous.

How will you keep it to yourself? I’ve had to tell lots of people because I’m so amazed I’m doing it. Good luck with your secret!

You'll smash it with C25K, it really works, and you’ll enjoy it.

I kept my early running on C25K a secret from everyone but used the forum to share my highs and lows. Once I could run my family we’re so surprised and proud of me.

Good luck with the programme, and of course you can talk as much as you want to about it in here. We won’t tell a soul. 😉

Eek you’ll be fine 😄

Completely get keeping it a secret, me too lol (apart from to the boyfriend) but good luck and well done for deciding to start ☺️

I'm new to it too. I've watched my sister do C25K join a running club and do a 10k! I so admired her (and how she's toned up 😂) that I wanted to try. First two runs done- you can do this!

Totally understand! I too kept quiet about running for ages. My family didn’t notice because I’d been going for early morning walks for years beforehand and due to my husband’s work he’s always asleep when I do my runs. He didn’t even notice when I went out in the evening now and then - because I’ve always been mad like that!

Thought I was the only one shy about telling people I've started running. Haven't told many but when I told my son, a cyclist, runner, climber, he was so proud of me. I felt really humbled. I'm enjoying this experience so much and feel great when I complete another run. Just back from week4 run3 ! Where did those 4 weeks go? Thanks for all the advice and encouragement from everyone on here 🏃‍♀️

Good plan, I reckon! Do it at your own pace in your own time. Sometimes I find it really helpful to be with others, and sometimes I don’t want to feel the pressure and live a little more ‘in the moment’, listening to my own body rather than feel pushed to do more and more - even if no-one says a word I still feel pressured. I mix it up at the moment: A run with a friend, then a solo run, and then a Park run (by myself, but among others, obviously) with extra walking, to end the C25k week.

That was so not the story I expected to find behind that headline!

Good luck with it - at least you already have a circle of supportive runners to help you. Enjoy your first runs.

Good luck! You'll do great. They will all be surprised when they do see you run.

I understand that. My husband runs and I didn’t tell him anything until the end of week 6 but he wasn’t that interested cos it probably didn’t seem any big deal to him. I told him again at the last run W9 but have done another 3 since and my family aren’t that interested sadly 🙁 good luck and I hope you really enjoy it x

How disappointing for you. Hooefully you are doing this for yourself anyway and will continue. My husband is trying to motivate me in his own way - trying to persuade me I can do a local 5k race in 2 weeks. I've told him it is couch to 5k over minimum of 9W. I don't want to run before I can walk, struggle/fail and then give up. So I will continue with W1 R2 on Wednesday as per Sarah Milligan 😁

You’re wise to take your time. That was the same reaction I got “ oh you can do a 10k then”. Errrr where does the wow how exciting well done what you are doing at the moment is brilliant enough!! I know people mean to be encouraging but I find it makes me feel that I’m not good enough where I am right now! I hope he understands and starts championing your weekly achievements cos they will happen and you’ll be so proud of yourself xx

I also kept C25K secret for several weeks from Mr E (who runs gazelle style). He was mildly interested to begin with, but as my running has continued he has become increasingly impressed and encouraging.

Go you Alycats, you will be fab. 😄

That’s brilliant to hear. I’m pleased for you. Fingers crossed Mr W will be more interested too soon! But I don’t want to run with him 😂
