Is a 10K possible or a silly idea?

Hello all

I completed C25K around 15 months ago and, this time last year, I was hoping to aim to complete a 10K as my next challenge. I made it up to 8K before a series of health issues threw a spanner in the works (diagnosed as asthmatic and then had to have a heart check-up due to dizziness when running). Anyway, I am better(ish!) now - have an inhaler which works well and the dizziness seems to be more postural than anything else (as long as I look forward and not to the sides too much I am OK - LOL I need blinkers like horses!). I can run a 5K once a week fine though I am only running 5K once a week.

In a couple of weeks' time, we have our local 10K challenge on a relatively flat course. I really wanted to see if I could do it, since I did do 8k (but a year ago). Do you think it's just a silly idea to attempt it since I've not done the distance before? I tend to run/walk as a technique on longer runs than 5k and I find it doesn't negatively affect my times. I don't really care about the time this year, just the challenge.

Or should I really be doing longer runs before attempting this?

Any ideas gratefully received!

Sam

You should try juju bridge to 10k plan I followed that after graduating and now managing 10k once a week along with 2 other shorter runs x

Personally I'd say if you're happy to run/walk it, then why not? Listen to your body, don't try and push beyond your limits (there are no medals for heroics, just for finishers! ;) ), and have fun.

Are you able to fit in any extra runs, even short ones, during the week? Obviously you haven't got much time but more km's this week might help you prepare?

Best of luck with it, let us know how you fare!

I think perhaps I may have to be more realistic now!

To jump from one 5k run per week to 10k goes against all the recommended steps up in training as laid out in the guide to post C25K running healthunlocked.com/couchto5...

If you accept that you may have to walk a considerable amount, then there is no harm. Doing 8k a year ago is hardly preparation for a 10k run in just a few weeks.

Thanks, I thought as much. I am living in a land of lunacy I think!
