As I discovered when I did the program last year I am definitely an early morning runner. It wakes you up and you also get to see where you live in an entirely different light. Nature is different. There is not as much traffic and people and so you get to see things you would normally miss. The other thing I love is 'tourist running'. The chance to run somewhere new and see different things. And because you are following a running route it is also views that the standard tourist / business traveller wouldn't see.
It used to be that I would ask at hotel reception for a takeaway menu. Now it's a running map. You would be surprised ho many hotels have them available.
The Reichshof in Hamburg is no exception. An easy to follow map offering 2,3km, 2,6km and 7.4km. Even the walk from the hotel to the lake was 400m which was perfect for the 5 minute brisk warm up. These efficient Germans....building their hotel to work precisely with C25K!
A few startled early morning commuters at the pedestrian crossing as my phone suddenly bellowed out 'HI ! I'M MICHAEL JOHNSON!' and before I knew it I was down at the lake.
Where I live in the middle of the Czech Republic is a small village of a few hundred people and so I may see the occasional other runner. Around the lake this morning there were runners galore and as I joffled along taking in the views I thought how great this program is and how great all of you are.
There were young people out there and very old people out there. There were the sprightly agile gazelles with the matching lycra outfits and the ponytail swishing back and forth as they glided past like a wisp of wind. The group of guys running along all laughing and holding a conversation whilst doing so. The person who was literally just leaning forward and walking at a slightly higher pace. Seriously overweight people and also people that look like they needed a good meal.
But here is the thing. They were all out there. They were all making a difference to their lives for them. Not for the others around them. I read on here all the time that people feel embarrassed to be out there in the public eye. How dare you be ashamed. You are making a difference to your life and to those dear to you.
Be proud! Be seen!... meine joffling lieblings.
Auf wiedersehn.
