I started couch to 5k in May last year and finished the year having run 3 full 5ks by the end of the year. It took me about 40 mins each time and I had to walk/run from about 3.5-4k onwards. My last run of the year was early November. I had decided that for whatever reason I was never going to manage a full 5k non-stop running.

Anyway, in January this year I decided to set myself a new challenge - to run 500km over the year. I restarted couchto5k from about Week 6 and went out 3x per week. In February I decided to make a conscious effort to run a full 5k and went to a tow path so I knew it would be flat - and I did it! 5km non stop running. I did it again in March - this time on a treadmill because of the snow. And I did it again on Good Friday! This time outside my front door, in my usual neighbourhood with hills and all.

I guess I’m trying to tell everyone who’s just starting, don’t give up. Not everyone can run a 30m 5k, not everyone can run 5k after 9 weeks, but keep persevering and just keep running and you’ll be surprised at what you can achieve.

Great post and so true. I always say after you can run 30 Min non stop running is yours to do whatever you want with it. I went on to run/walk half marathons, some go on for speed and some stick with the continuous running all are off the couch and have major health benefits. Happy running.
