Just completed this outside jogging very low. Have decided that the treadmill is not for me as the peer pressure at the gym is too much and I tend to speed up. Silly I know!

I know what you mean, with treadmills you start listening to other people’s footfall and cadence 😅

Can empathise with the listening and influencing in the gym.🤔

Do not know how busy your gym is , they always produce peak usage times and providing you have the luxury of flexibility, it just maybe an option🤔🙈

It is a still Brillant piece of kit for building your calve muscles at full incline and slow speed, and indoor Fartlek, speed fun in Swedish. Great to get outside,👍but a good resource inside also.

In what way do you "tend to speed up? " - because unless you press the buttons to speed up , then locking on to somebody elses' running cadence can't speed you up :) It is quite common for new runners to run with a cadence which is too low and it is something that can be improved. So, perhaps sometimes, listen to the sound of your neighbours footsteps and lock onto them without speeding up the machine. :) You may indeed find this makes your running form "better"

That is all very correct and true bazza, but for a novice like me and perhaps roset, I see no conflict between Slow & steady and just breathe in C25k and Nico Nico.

I am not a scholar on either, but contrast and compare is not rocket science.🤔

It is roset’s unique journey and whatever she needs to do in wk4 to get away from a treadmill and outside that’s just great in my opinion.

It’s her perception at present and I am sure she may reflect and may conclude something different.🤔 It is all a continuous learning and improvement journey and enjoyment.

As you well know it is more about using your handbrake and getting your oxygen load than your accelerator🤔at the beginning.Was for me anyhow.

Had no time to think about much else other than posture and humming Auld Lang Syne.🤔😂😂😂👍

I re-read and reflected on what you have said and cannot see how that can work🤔 In order to keep your feet under your hips and get your oxygen you require you set the belt speed at a pace you can manage and at one deg to simulate outside conditions, so now you are off and in your groove, either you are good and can only raise or lower the belt speed. It is very dangerous to start over striding on an incompatible belt. 🤔

That does not work and hence the possibility of being influenced by others around you and distraction.To be safe you have to get into your own zone.

I personally witness Young fit people with the belt at max speed doing interval training and they leave it constant max speed and hop on and off the belt to their programme intervals. Amazing but distracting as an example.🤔😂😂👍👏👏

I was not commenting on treadmill versus outside running - I was merely asking the OP why she felt that she "had to speed up" while using a treadmill. I am all for outside running at slow pace - and learning how to breathe in a manner that suits the individual.

Yes I agree with you.Got to be in your own zone.Maybe not easy for a complete beginner.thats what I am but a pretty senior one🙈😂😂😂👍

Thing is that you can set the actual speed of the machine to a set number of whatever you like - could be quite slow. You then run at that speed. You could run at that speed with a low cadence or a high(er) cadence - your cadence does indeed partly determine your running pace when running outside ( cadence x stride length) - but on the treadmill your pace speed is determined by the machine setting, to keep up with the machine at different running cadence you automatically change your stride length a little to compensate . This "could" be dangerous if you take what your are doing to the extreme - but not if using some common sense and caution. I find that when I am using a treadmill at my local gym, I have to decrease my cadence to match that of somebody alongside me ( because i have a naturally high cadence) even though they are running at a faster pace than me . I do this because I get distracted/annoyed by hearing two different beats as I run :) A bit like listening to a piece of music where the rest of the band is not playing in time with the drummer :)

For me a novice trying to keep good posture with open chest and head up etc🤔 and maximising my foot strike area and maximising my cushioning effect and reducing the impact on knees, etc, and as per C25k programme FAQ Posts, foot strike under your hips, and hips under your shoulders, no overstriding, Pretty well governs your option of a given comfortable belt speed

and allow you to comfortably breathe also.🤔

I would be more determined now to get in my zone as a novice runner and try and blank out everything around me.🤔👏👏

Or yes just go outside.🤔😂😂😂🙈
