CHRISTMAS GPS CHALLENGE….TUTORIAL No. 1

Last Friday I set this challenge to you all healthunlocked.com/couchto5...

With few attempts yet posted, I thought that I should have a go myself, but I have lost my running watch ( a frustrating mystery), my aged once smart phone has had all its capacity squeezed by unwanted updates to the extent that it is now just a dumb phone ( a frustrating pain in the neck), so I had to resort to my trusty tablet and I forgot to switch off Wifi in Location Services with the above result.

Having pored over my maps until I found the perfect route, having braved the traffic crossing the High Street on a precise trajectory, to create the delicate arc of my Peace Dove’s bill, having walked in careful, geometrically calculated circles in the town square to draw the all seeing eye……..unfortunately my avian looks more like an overweight seagull that has flown into high tension cables than the bird that will bring us a peaceful new year (could be a sign of the times!).

I have never used this device for tracking in towns, so I was not aware of its sensitivity, nor indeed was I aware of the number of Wifi hotspots in town. So my 7.3k route, tracked on the Maverick app, is either one that I will have to repeat……..or maybe I will just find another route.

Surely somebody can do better than this!!!

End of tutorial.

Indeed I did and I sometimes think the unintentional is more interesting than the artfully calculated.

......back to the drawing board.......

This is brilliant (should I say birdlliant...)! I didn't quite understand your first post as I haven't got a cellphone and have never used any app on a phone (I rely on the kindness of strangers and an old MP3 player for the NHS podcast) but now I've got it. It's such a great idea to run and trace some animal-like route! Well done as I can't really imagine how you're planning the route, it all remains a magic mystery to me.

There is no reason why you couldn't just trace a line on a map, but we are trying to encourage people to exercise, so it would be good if you ran or walked your route. ( I will admit that I walked this route, as I was giving myself a running rest day today)

I just looked for shapes on the map of my home town and the bird stood out, but required some delicate work around the head..........oh well.

Thank you for the explanation! I'll give it a go with Google map or a paper map: I run on a park which is a Vauban fortress, so it's starry shape but not sure the tracks really fit a nice pattern.
