You'd really need to consult with someone who has your records and you in front of them and a good deal of biomechanical knowledge and expertise, ideally with a predisposition in favour of activity. I think you are sensing (correctly) that sometimes people issue blanket prohibitions without much thought or evidence... but then 'run' is different things to different people, just as 'bad back' is (and yours had been 'bad' enough to require surgery)

A structured gradual programme like C25K and then maintaining a regular running habit, especially if backed up by work on your core strength *may* be positively good for you and your back, provided you've got some better information on which to base your decision (and it is your decision)...

We can not give out medical advice on here and wouldn't want to. We have a forum mantra " if in doubt, check it out". Have a word with your GP or a sports physio and see what they say. Good luck.

I would check first. Get a second opinion if need be. But running puts stress on the body that other exercise doesn't. Might be that after 5 years your back is now strong enough. It might not. Googleme is right you need to make sure you are talking to someone who isn't just blanket against running. And if they say no running ask what exercise is OK. But they will need your medical records to advise correctly.

Make sure they know you mean slow build up to 5k not next year's London marathon.
