Hello So i have this *see photo* coming up at my old school
anyway... i did my routine 5k yesterday and decided to head over and test some of it out. i would say 90% of it may be grass, muddy path(hopefully not wet) and 10% gravel path. i used my hoka clifton 3 footwear which are quite spongy and great on the paths and roads. now i wasnt running at a particularly fast pace but i felt myself getting tired real quick on the grassy bits and to be honest when i got back on to the road on the way home i felt much better. i feel there must be some loss of energy on the soft on soft. i have some asics gels which are much firmer do you think they would make any difference? oh and i nearly slipped over on a muddy spot haha.

If it is likely to be muddy or wet use the shoes with the best grip.
Running on grass does require more energy (so it is great to train on grass sometimes, at least) and I can't imagine that either pair is going to make a significant difference.
I do a lot of mixed running and unless conditions are really boggy I tend to favour road shoes, because they are better on the road, believe it or not. That said, I would only use trail shoes at my local parkrun, at Killerton, because of steep, stony woodland tracks.
