This is not just exhaustion - Week 8 Run 1

It's 9, 28. Thats 9 am and I have overslept Mr Smooth's date invitation. It's also now a low 28 degrees in our bathroom, so yes Lucifer has finally taken his leave of this part of the world - 4 degrees cooler - glorious! Lucifer arrived pretty much 6 weeks ago, which was Week 2 of my C25K plan and when I first appealed for hot weather running help, I had no idea exactly how long he'd hang around. True to his devilish nature at 4am this morning he decided high winds, a 10 degrees temperature drop and tons of rain lashing against the windows would be in order, just to say his fond farewell.

So for a change I was quite chipper, I'd overslept but no big deal, it was cooler and I'd already done the 25 minute sessions last week - oh and I'd managed it despite the hill that kills turning into a shark and biting a big chunk out of my glutes. The halo of smugness was glowing brightly.

So down the slope of hope, I start my run a little sooner in distance terms, but that's because I usually faff with the tech before going. For the first time ever I am actually running downhill and not up, it felt strangely wonderful, and then into the hill that kills. Mmm, she didn't like me last time, and made me pay, but it was hard and not too awful so I continued onwards, upwards to Lovers Lane. Still okay around Villa Bali and back up Lovers Lane, and then bam, wham kerpow. Waves of tiredness came over me and so I thought maybe it would be better to re-do the Lovers Lane bit back and forth to finish the run. But then that way the hill that kills will have beaten me and she aint going to do that.

I trudged on and trudged was the word, Mr Smooth decided this was just the point to suggest I may like to vary the pace. Whaaattt.... vary it how, there's only one variation going on and it isn't going to be faster. Back up the hill that kills, with my creepy horror movie chant 'You can do it, if you go slow' on old floss repeat mode - I know it's hardly Stephen Spielberg material is it? I also engaged tiptoe running mode - it's weird but when I need to slow down if I run on tiptoes for a few paces, it seems to slow me down. Not sure how I worked that one out and it looks very strange...

Back to Lovers Lane when Mr Smooth piped up 'You might be feeling exhausted' - I wished I could have responded in my best tv advert manner ' This is not just exhaustion Mr Smooth, this is Marks and Spencer's exhaustion'. However, I didn't I just shouted - I am effing exhausted - right outside the barking beagle house - oops. Double oops I then tried to smile at 3 tourists and say buongiorno as they'd just heard this bright red mad English woman swear at an unknown foe..

They hurried past and hallelujah Mr Smooth told me I could stop running now. Except I messed up - often Mr Smooth talks for a little while before the deadline actually arrives, therefore I reckon I stopped about 20 seconds too soon. But i couldn't have run another step truly.

Not angry, just a bit miffed and big lesson learnt, just because you kicked Lucifer into touch, doesn't mean smugness can't trip you up.

And for the statty folk this is how I did...

Colour chart - back to Monarch I am afraid.

Sounds good. The effing exhausted bit made me laugh out loud - that is so me! I am so impressed by the temperatures you run in.

in reply to pollyp1

Really I was so angry and it was quite loud... Never mind next time out maybe I can try and be a polite runner...

I've learnt, over the years, to move on from my inner anger but now and again it resurfaces!

in reply to pollyp1

Mr Smooth was so benign when he said it... I love him to bits but really...it was neither the time nor the place to have got me....

Inner anger safely harnessed now😇

Lol... I'm sure he'll forgive you.

But you did it - whoop whoop! I know, I keep thinking, week 7 done now, the rest must be fine but then I realise that it is actually an extra 3 minutes for week 8. I barely finish the 25 minutes so I too must resist the smugness. You are doing amazing Hidden , you're approaching the finishing straight. Mind you I worry that you and Mr Smooth are not getting on so smoothly (ha) now. Is that because you're letting him down gently now you're reaching the end?

in reply to bareliz

You've got it - I was suffering from early separation anxiety, but if he is dumping me slowly then I dump him first. Its the only way to maintain any sense of integrity. But then again, I do love his voice and his bling ... see I'm still hooked.

You will be fine next week I promise... and I am looking out for you. We will mount that podium, arm in arm and a glass of red on standby. Speaking of which i shared a virtual red with mizz_happy and RebeccaSK . Rebecca is doing an aquathon - truly amazing . Go Rebecca...

You know what will shake off that exhaustion, don't you...

in reply to Rignold

Omg Squats, do you think they may have caused the exhaustion anyway?

Never.

Funny I thought you may say that...

Well done!!! I love stats. So much so I've just looked at my own elevation gains. The route I've done this week is 32m but last weeks route was 42m. But the Wednesday run where I did the 5km was 47m 😮 xx

in reply to MrsT82

Ouch 47m see you are a star, that makes my hill that kills, nothing at all....

You do wonderfully...I am enjoying the cool morning runs by the sea...🙂 Although..a tad more warmth would not be unwelcome😄

in reply to Oldfloss

Well Lucifer isn't here maybe on his way?

My w8r1 tomorrow and thankfully will be running in cooler climes than you, I am somewhat in awe of you running in the heat that you have been.

I end up sweatier than a sweaty thing that's been smacked with a sweaty stick so I think running in those temps there would just be a pile of running gear floating in a puddle at the finish line

in reply to rolysmate

Thanks rolysmate, thankfully now Lucifer has hightailed it back home I hope to do a little better from now on, both on stamina and timing. But it isn't a race, so steady as she goes. Good luck for yours tomorrow - still on holiday?

no unfortunately that was just a few days away, long weekend in a couple of weeks and then September off to menorca

Think I'll be running in the morning as long as tonight isn't to late (of to a black tie do) a surprise celebration to celebrate a friend of mines sporting achievements

in reply to rolysmate

Stick to virtual bubbles the hangover is much easier to handle... good luck for tomorrow (or whenever the next one falls)

Brilliant! W6R1 was a killer but I wasn't expecting W8R1 to have the same impact, but it did. Happy to report that W8R2 was more manageable so don't 'sweat it' (clever use of language, huh?). I am truly in awe of you running in those temperatures.

in reply to 61trying

Nor me you know I really thought it's just another 3 minutes and it's cooler than a furnace. This has got to be simple, mmmm running gods had other ideas. Never mind next time out I am biting the hill that kills back... see how she likes a shark biting her glutes..

Glad to hear Lucifer has left. We woke to a tremendous thunderstorm yesterday morning.

Hope you enjoy running in cooler weather.

in reply to O505k

Oh I am sure I will. I am hoping I can start reducing the shade of red my face goes, which I keep attributing to heat , but is probably lack of fitness. . I hope your thunderstorm wasn't too horrid. Here it did a lot of good as for the first time in ages it was cool enough to get to sleep

A low 28 degrees?? Where in the world are you? I'm in the UK running in 14C in the mornings which is perfect for me. Anything above 20C and I'd struggle.

in reply to Catherine2255

Italy... we've suffered Lucifers heatwave for about 6 weeks now. Last week record heat in the back garden 46 degrees. Living like hobbits... I am hoping cooler temperatures improve my times.... Lucifer i understand is now in Dubai - they can keep him!

Well you really do have a following of odd characters, Lucifer who clearly has the hots for you, Mrs Smugg who visits you from time to time and Mr Smooth who gives you the runs, strange bunch.

in reply to

Yes, funnily enough none seem to make it to a public stage, I wonder why that may be? My head is definitely strange...

You'll do for me, you always make me smile ☺

Ha ha! I have so many times been tripped up by smugness. You'd think I'd learn!! Well done you for killing the hills. I'm also the mad English women here. I hear people say ´c'est l'anglaise ´ like that will excuse anything.. you know what? It does!!! Lets hope lucifer stays away. He's left us too.. who'd have thought 28 degrees would be nice to run in! I've said it before, roll on autumn. Well done JCR. You rocked it!

in reply to froggyrunner

Autumn so looking forward to it. Ciao La franchese!
