Would using a cross trainer count as "cross training" or should it be something that rests the legs?

Perfect!

You only need to avoid impact exercise on your rest days.

Go for it!

Thanks. Have a cross trainer hubby bought me years ago gathering dust and it is a really good one. Was going to ditch it in the house move but will take it with me now 🙂

Although... The elliptical machine is possibly the lowest return in terms of fitness benefit for effort put in of any machine ever invented. Great for people with specific medical conditions. Largely pointless otherwise. The step master or rowing machine would be much better.

Rigs knows this stuff. I've never been in a gym!

What about a bike? I went out today and pushed myself to my limit getting up hills! Please tell me it was worth it!

Real bike is great. Stationary bike pointless, unless it is a spin bike in which case it is super.

I take it that is some contraption in a gym? Haven't braved one of those!

I use the elliptical on rest days, great for burning calories and weight loss in my experience. I usually do an hour on decent resistance (11-12/20). I also use the time to listen to new music and select stuff to use when running, or do an audiobook.
