Slow 5K

So I ran 5K this morning. Not intentionally as I am on week6 day 3 but I just kept on going (missed out the walk) and timed it with my Fitbit. I am entered for a 5K race for life on June 11th so wanted to know If I could actually do it!! However it took me 46 minutes which I should think is very slow. I'm down to do a park run on Saturday , I am a bit apprehensive that I'll be the slowest there. So very very happy to have run 5K with no ill effects but should I do the park run?, in prep for R for L. Think I am being a wimp. It's amazing how this programme works I couldn't run a minute a few weeks ago, I am approaching 60 yrs and can run 5K . We'll sort of run/jog/shuffle πŸ˜€πŸƒβ€β™€οΈ

Hi Helen,

I did 5k yesterday (final week of the course) and it took me 46 minutes too. I hit the big 6-0 next year. I do parkrun and have never been last or even near it. There is a broad range of abilities at my local one, from 17 minutes to 75.

Check out the results page for your local parkrun and you'll get an idea of the time range. There's always a tail runner, so you'll never be last.

I'm doing Race for Life in June, too. I did that before as a walker, too.

The two events are similar, as there is no pressure and you do them at your own pace.

Good luck with both Parkrun and Race for Life! Parkrun is good practice for running 'en masse'! I hang about and let the fast ones go first and then potter along behind at my own pace!

Hi Maci

Thanks for your reply, it has reassured me greatly!! I had visions of the marshalls yawning and looking at their watches as I shuffle along - lol !!

I'm enjoying this running malarkey , it's been my challenge to run 5K before I turning 60 in August. Guess I've done that now πŸ˜ƒπŸ˜ƒ

So park run on Saturday, and Race for Life here I come -all be it slowly, yay 😊

Be careful upping your distances so dramatically, the program is designed to help your muscles and joint progress at a speed that works. You will be effective nearly doubling you running time twice in a week which could leave you prone to injury. If you do parkrun I would do the program run, then change to walking the rest, just to protect yourself. You don't want an injury before the 11 June

Yes I was a bit concerned about 'keeping on running' however I run so slowly that I could probably walk quicker and I really wanted to see if I was up to the 5K needed for the Race for Life. Now I've done it, I will go back to the programme a bit happier that a 5K will be doable on June 11th . Thanks for your concern gratefully received πŸ˜€

Maybe you could walk quicker but it is a different movement.

My first 5k was an hour and 10 minutes, so I have to say, you know nowt about slow... (but then I don't do events so it *really* doesn't matter)

No it really doesn't matter the speed you do these runs. I just didn't want to be the last one running on Saturday. I've looked at the results page for the local park runand there are a couple of 48 minute runs by the veterans. So onwards and upwards. I feel ok no aches or pains , so onwards and upwards πŸ˜ƒπŸ˜ƒ

For someone who calls herself GrannyHelen57, and is just doing W6R3, a 46 minutes 5K is really good! You make me want to get outside right now and do that. After 11 weeks of training, I have been able to go longer and farther but the faster is eluding me.

WELL DONE!

Hi

I must admit I was a bit like Forrest Gump and kept running. So I did 'it' but had better go back to the programme now I know I can run/jog/shuffle a 5K or I could end up injured or some such thing. Only been running since April and yes Granny to one baby girl and sixty in August. Thanks for your encouragement πŸ˜ƒπŸ˜ƒ

Definitely do Parkrun! I'm such a fan of it, you'll find yourself amongst lots of lovely supportive people. I have done it off and on over the years and ranged from running it in around 35 mins to walking in close to 50mins, depending on my "state" at the time. I have never felt anything other than very welcome, and thanks to the lovely tailrunners you will indeed never be last! Enjoy.
