Does any one take Brufen to get rid of calf/ leg/ in fact any pain the day after a run. My aches seem to occur two days later rather than the day after. Or should I not take anything and wait for the aches to disappear before running again. Thanks every one

try having a bath containing Epsom salts after your run. Make sure you are stretching well post run too. I also stretch on rest days after warming my legs up dog walking. I use voltarol as a last resort.

This is the best advice and I echo this too :)

In my early weeks, I used to put Ibuprofen gel on my calves and shins an hour before I ran! Then I got a foam roller and learned that I was supposed to stretch AFTER a run. The foam roller was really painful to start with but it has improved the calf pain no end. Coupled with the stretching it has pretty much dealt with the aches and pains, although if I don't stretch on a rest day, they start getting a bit tight again.

Whats this foam roller you are talking about and are they any good?

Hi Jmiss , if you look on my old posts, there's one called "Ooh the pain" and there's a picture of my foam roller. It took me a while to get used to it and learn how to use it properly but it's like having a full sports massage without the price tag! I wouldn't be without it now..

OMG...ha ha ha ha ha.... that is one of the best reads in a long time....may read that again when I feel like I need a lift in spirits. Been a rough day at work so cheered me up no end...not sure I will bother with the roller though :D

I've always found the post race sting is worst 2 days after the event. I don't take anything for the pain but a bit of a light stretch and a brisk walk / light jog for a couple of miles tops eases those pains and puts me on to the road of recovery. Foam rolling works wonders too

I did in the early days, but don't seem to suffer so bad now. As soon as I feel I am seizing up I stretch some more, I have just ordered a foam roller from Amazon so waiting to see if that helps too.

It will ease off as your legs get stronger. Running is all in the calves. Make sure you run slowly and have the correct shoes☺

Aches, pains and niggles are common if you are new to exercise, or any new exercise which uses previously underused muscles

Hi fellow jogger....and well done for joining in. Like you I am 57 & got aches and pains on day 2 rather than the day after and I put it down to my lack of fitness, weight and age....I did start leaving 3 days in between when I got to the longer runs and that seemed to help. Now I am getting fitter I have noticed my legs don't ache anywhere near as much and I managed to do 2 x 30 minutes runs with just 1 day in between this week. Its surprising what we can do when we try. May be leave 2 days in between, stretch at the end and see how you go. Pain killers are not something I would take for aching legs from exercising. Good luck and keep going.
