There's lot of us who are doing this to help lose weight. I'm on week 8 now and I personally think that it's the long term, consistent 20-30 minute runs that will aid with the weight loss (combined with healthy eating). Although 30 minutes of exercise 3 times a week goes a long way towards that goal, especially if you haven't done any in years (like me). Well done for starting :)

What Lizzyb 11066 said... and you've come to the right place. Welcome.

Coincidentally that's just how much weight I did lose. And downloading and using the NHS C25K podcasts was a big part of how I achieved it. Not just (or even particularly) the calories burned through exercise (it's not many!) but all the changes that happened as a result.

As Lizzyb said.

You've definitely come to the right place for support; there's lot of support and encouragement on here and I find it helps to post my progress as others will help spur you on x

Welcome eensnsn! You've come to the right place for support :)

Great decision to start C25K. It's not going to be easy - but take it slow and steady and you'll get there. I remember my first 'run' and I thought i'd made a terrible mistake because I found it so hard, I thought i'd never complete the program. Keeping it slow is key.

It's not a race or a competition, if you need to repeat a week - that's OK.

We'll all be here with our pom-poms cheering you on :)

Running alone won't do too much to help... The running with calorie counting (my fitness pal is the go to app) is the answer. Non-run days seem pretty strict but on a run day when you can have about 400 extra calories, it's a lot more doable and seems hugely less restrictive. It feels like you're only dieting 3 days out of 7, running on the other 4 :D Good luck!

I feel it is a mistake to think about running in terms of calories burned. It's just a good thing to do. The risks of staying overweight are reduced, you feel better about yourself, there's a sense of achievement all of which empower other measures (which are going to be necessary)... and it may well have an impact on your metabolism.

My own continuous 30 minute run often struggles to reach 200 calories burned (as measured by my Fitbit Charge HR and by Runkeeper... MFP is hopelessly overoptimistic because it makes assumptions about your pace) and very few of my runs burn as much as 400 calories! There are some people trying to lose weight who need to 'eat their exercise calories' (seems to be people with thyroid issues, typically) but for most people it isn't necessary (and probably not desirable long term given that it is usually about retraining appetite and expectations... and we can all have periods where we are not able to run)

Sorry, I feel I should elaborate! My calories burned comes from my Strava, I don't always eat exercise calories, but it's nice to know they're there and I've earned them - it just takes the pressure off what seems like a heavy restriction. It certainly works for me but it might not for everyone. Everyone's body responds to diet and fitness in a different way so trial and error is the best bet. See what works for you and go for it!

Weight loss is a massive motivator for a lot of us and is often the initiator. For me, the confidence and feel good comes later in the programme and is now a great add-on that keeps me on track. Unfortunately, for the time being and until I get to my target, weight will be very much in the forefront of my mind and its what makes me do something about it.

I don't believe you can have good or bad motivations, as long as they stay that way - motivators. As soon as it becomes a chore, a task or makes you despondent, thats when it's not good for you and you should re-evaluate. But again, I should stress that this is my experience, and it won't be for everyone! eensnsn - search weight loss on this forum and you'll find a huge amount of advice and support from fellow c25k runners. Good luck! Thanks for the advice GoogleMe , I'll get working on that expectation and appetite retraining!

Weight loss comes with running constantly for 30 mins 3 times a week, and on a balanced diet, maybe better to go to the weight loss community..

True young man! I actually put weight on, (which is probably a bit off putting for some folk)... but I was slightly underweight and the leaner, trimmer and more toned me,as a result of the running, a continued healthy diet and exercise generally, is heavier... and of course, according to my husband, even lovelier... ( I don't think!!!! ) :)

Folks who run regularly, eat healthily and look after themselves in general will get the weight off and keep it off. Start running with c25k and don't stop 😊

I am brand new too and will do the first run tomorrow. I need to lose weight as well but more than that I just need to get my bounce back! Hopefully we will see each other through this together like the others on this forum have.
