Hello, I started walking last week on my treadmill, I need to lose weight. I start off at 3.8 and build up to 4.5 which is a fast walk for me. I do 2 miles in 48 minutes. The thing is I can't figure out how many kph I'm doing.

Hi Newdawn
calculator.net/pace-calcula...
Plugging the numbers in here will help you convert to KPh but I wouldn't worry about speed too much at the moment it's about building up time.
Good luck
Thanks for replying. Do you think i can lose weight by what I'm doing. Should I be walking more.
I think jt24 is the perfect person to answer this.
Thank you. Hopefully Jt will see this
While we wait, I'll give you my considered opinion. First of all, well done for getting off the couch! A few questions now:
(1) is losing weight your main motivation for starting some walking?
(2) this is meant positively: why are you walking on a treadmill and not outdoors? Is it difficult to walk where you live?
(3) Why do you want to know kph / km/h ?
(4) have you considered jogging and doing the Couch to 5K program? Or has a Dr advised you lose weight 1st?
Just so you know, to burn approximately 100 calories, you need to run/jog approximately 1 mile. That means to lose a significant amount weight means a LOT of walking. In all seriousness you need to combine your exercise with changes in your diet. It's not easy but it CAN be done.
John
PS 'fast' walking is a great way to start.
Hehe! I have only just seen this I was out walking! 9k with a result of pub lunch
To lose 1lb of fat you need to burn off 3500 calories more than your body's requirement or consume 3500 calories less. If you start to build up muscle it weighs more than fat so scales aren't as reliable as noticing shape change.
My advice for weight loss is to follow a healthy eating plan and then exercise. That way you're consuming less calories, they are 'healthier' calories and you're burning extra off too.
I lost 3.5 stone in 4 months before starting running yet I've only lost 9lb in the 4 months since starting running. I have dropped a few sizes though.
The last thing you need is to be disheartened and you've started exercising which is fantastic. I don't think walking at that pace will change your weight without you changing your eating plan BUT the exercise will help you burn it off quicker and the faster you can get the better. Also, your heart and lungs will thank you for moving more, your overall health is as/ if not more important than 'weight'.
Stick with it, do it, go outside, find the confidence you need to make the change you want to. Build up walking, definitely move on to c25k, choose a healthy plan and you will honestly find it is all achievable.
Good luck
Hi Jt, I wonder if my treadmill is reading correct, I actually can't walk any faster,I know if I was outdoors i wouldn't be able to walk that fast, i have to keep my legs
moving on the treadmill. I'm actually dripping when i finish
I am the queen of sweatiness
It sounds like your treadmill and kph are maybe 'off' somewhere. If you only have 2 stone to lose it's highly unlikely that you couldn't walk faster once your cardio' adjusts. Give yourself a few weeks and see how it all feels.
Going by bmi, which as we know doesn't tell the whole picture but it gives us a guide, I'm still 1 stone and 6 lb in 'overweight' for my height.
Oh my God John at my rate sure I will never lose it just walking. I need to lose 2 stone. I wanted to know the kph because I'm using an app to track my food and exercise.
I tried jogging but it kills me.
If jogging kills you, then in addition to everything that jt24 said, I would suggest doing the Couch to 5k program purely walking, alternating between normal walking speed and brisk walking, ie the speed that leaves you dripping (as you put it).
Ok, the kph thing. Your treadmill: (1) what units does it display speed in?
(2) can the display be changed?
With regard to jogging, think about that as a goal. However if you are *very* overweight, it's generally advisable to lose weight 1st - running with a load of excess weight can bring its own problems.
Thank you Jt I'm going to stay at it. I'm eating healthy so somethings got to give
1 mile = ~1.61 kilometres (1.609344km)
2 miles in 48 minutes = 2.5 miles in 60 minutes = 2.5mph
2.5mph x ~1.61 = ~4.025kph (4.02336kph)
