Times, paces ?/ SIGH!!

At age 69, I have run a 29:12 5k at parkrun - but these days I am struggling to do it around 34 minutes. Whether that is because it has been summer here and very hot and humid, or I am another year older, who knows??  But right now I am in the state of mind to forget about paces and I have lately been running solely to what my HRM tells me.

Frankly, I think that there is one BIG problem in this running malarkey - and that it for most people , success or otherwise largely comes down to how fast you can run.  However, unless you are aiming to run a 5K in less than 12:37.35 ( for a man) or 14:11.15 ( for a woman) , you are always going to be a runner-up :)

How fast can you smell a rose????  :)

Oh how I wish it was summer here but then again UK summer can be proper rubbish, I mean i have never experienced anything above 34c here and them days are very few and far between, average summer temps are what 23c normally and only for July/August.

5K in less than 12:37.35 who is that Mo Farah!!!

Hmm - 23C is a mid winter temp here :)

I don't do running in 1-2C temperatures - I can't fit inside my fridge!! :)

I'm not sure age has anything to do with it as there are some people on here much advanced from their 50s who put a lot of us to shame!  I'm 51 and my comfortable pace is between 7 to 7 and a half mins per k.  I can go faster, but not for long!  At my best I got it down to the high 6s, but that's when I'm fit and well and the temperature is just right.  I need to remember to set the alarm now that the temp is going up - I ran at about midday today and nearly melted.

Melted? where are you?

I won't go before 18:00, tonight I went at 19:11 and it says it was 12.2c I did 3.15 miles er 5.06 km and my pace was (hold on as I work in miles lol) 6 min 33 sec a km (or 9 min 12 seconds a mile) and I am usually there or there about, I am comfortable at that just about.

I graduated just before Christmas and with Christmas rather lost the routine of three times a week. Have been using the post5k podcasts which are really good but tried a run keeper programme to take me to 10k. It was too hard for me and I got pretty fed up, not helped by irregular running. This month we have no dates away so I am going to get back into three times a week. My speed yesterday was an average 8.02 min per k but the first two km were mid 7 min per km. the last hill just finished me off! I'm 63 slightly overweight and generally pretty fit with tennis and walking     I'm determined to get my average speed up to low7min per k and therefore increase distance covered in the half hour running which is depressingly short considering all the effort put in😂😂

There is a bloke 5 doors away from me and he is 65 goes 5 miles 3 times a week and he is going strong and he is doing miles in 10:45 per mile average (i've seen his garmin watch) , fact is he does 5 miles not 5k, I won't even attempt that to be fair.

OOps, I have worked out my per km time out wrong, I have found a calculator tjat does it for me, it's here > runningforfitness.org/calc/...

Bloody hell I didn't know it was that and god knows how I was working it out.

I'm 50 and graduated 2 weeks ago at my first Parkrun and did it in 33.59 minutes. I've only been running for 7 months, never liked it as a child! I guess speed comes with training over time. My son is a club runner and suggested building speed and endurance into your training programme. So one day he will do interval training, the next day he will go for a long run, the next he will do a short fast run, etc. It works for him, but he is 24!

Going to be 58 in a few months, Parkrun PB from two years ago was 27.42  and this years best is 29.28.  There are a lot of runners in the over 50s bracket in our Parkrun with much )and I mean much) faster times than me

Was 28:34 for 5k yesterday, not too bad, I've had quicker and I've been slower I aim for 5.15 km in 29:00 , I run 5 km 3 x a week.

Never can get up to do a Park Run although I am registered and have my tag with the number and that, going to have to try and do 1 but I tend to go in the evening and going for a 5 k first thing (well 09:00) is going to kill me on a Saturday AM.

Usually once or twice a year I go hell for leather on a mile run and I mean as fast as I can manage and I am a proper mess at the end of it, but no way could I do that over 3.1 miles I'd be in A&E if I tried that... I know that there will be loads of 50+'s well faster than I am but it's just life that, i'll never be Seb Coe that's a fact.

Times and age can be irrelevant... when I finished my HM at the weekend, not far behind me was a guy of similar age who had just completed the full marathon.. we both started at the same time, but he did the same route twice!!

There are sooooo many factors that effect your running times. The only race I have is with myself :-)

I graduated a couple of weeks ago and started c25k end of January , at 67 didn't know how it would work out, but enjoy running on my own,  I did  park run and completed the course in 41 minutes I ran/ jogged all the way, totally exhausted, my phone did not record times, forgot to lock screen , but my previous practice runs were longer and the times averaged 8.57 -9.11. Frankly I am pleased I completed it but being me I'd like to run better, so trying the stepping stone podcast out  to improve , my very slow pace , with Laura .

There are "age grade" calculators which take into account your age/sex and give you an age graded score and time. FWIW my age graded time for 5k is 21:20 ... I'll take that!

Oh I just had a go on that too, it said that my age graded time would be 25:09 based on my last outing, and lets face it your last one is the one that counts afaic.

I need to change my running watch to KM really, I know how to but I just can't get out of using Miles, I like miles :-), I know that 3.10 miles is 5k though.
