I am running the Race for Life on the 17th May but I am only on week three and I am going on holiday to India in a couple of weeks time so I am unable to do the nine weeks is there anyway I can train to run the 5k without doing myself a mischief?

The programme tells us to do 3 runs each week, so it 'forces' you to take days off. These rest days are good for you. If you don't take the days off you're risking an injury (or two) as your body won't have time to recover between one run and the next. Consequently, I don't think forcing the pace is a good idea.

But don't pull out of Race for Life - just accept that you're going to go really slowly and maybe have one or two sessions of walking along the way. Completing the Race for Life is more important than running all the way.

You don't get fit by exercising. You get fit from resting after exercising. The rest days are critical in building fitness. If you don't include the rest days, it won't work properly.

I would do the first couple of weeks of C25K, continue as much as you can when you get back, and accept that you may have to walk parts of the 5k. Unless you're already fit enough, of course. Please don't risk damaging yourself by taking on too much or pushing too hard.

Thank you for your advice

To get a detailed and informed opinion would require more information.

Questions: How long are you away for? What exercise can you do while away in India? What is your current level of fitness, i.e. how physically comfortable are you with your current training?

However, one possible way forword might be for you to find a sports personal trainer local to you and pay for an assessment and advice. They, perhaps, could produce a more personal and rapid schedule.

I am away for 10 days in India and I am hoping to do a lot of swimming and walking. Im a bit overweigh and my current level of fitness is not to bad for a 65 year old. I do intend to have a days rest in between my running but just going for a short walk would that be ok. Thank you for your tips

From what I understand walking should be ok as you use slightly different muscles

hobocat1950,

How did your trip to India go?

Were you able to keep active/training?

And what, if any, impact did it have on your 5k schedule?

Cheers.

India was great didn't do much running as it was 44 degrees but did a lot of swimming and was able to pick up my training as soon as I got back
