Interesting... I've seen my relatives do all this kind of stuff and it was a factor in keeping me away from running. I really, really, really didn't want to get involved in any of it. When I read about the NHS C25K programme and saw that it involved a 5 minute walk at the beginning and end of the session and that was all, I thought it might be for me (although only being asked to run for 60 seconds at a time was another attraction!)
Very very occasionally I do feel an urge to stretch after my run session and it is invariably because I have skimped on that 5 minute walk for some reason. It's a simple thing but very powerful.
That's not to say that I don't think there are serious merits to creating an all round fitness programme and mine involves yoga. I did the NHS Strength and Flexibility programme, again with the lovely Laura and keep telling myself I'll do as suggested and regularly repeat the final session but it is yoga that I actually do, and I recognise a lot of the tips and adjustments in that article. But I also feel it is about the different mindset with which you approach yoga rather than 'stretching'.
