Foot update
Aww no! Not a quick fix then. What an unhelpful doctor - you'd think they would be keen to encourage us to maintain healthy actvities! Can you get advice from a podiatrist or similar?
Whaaaat?? idiot, I bet he/she doesn't run so doesn't know the addicition.
I do hope you find something to help with the pain. Keep Running and Keep Smiling?
I'm not surprised you feel like that. What an idiot! Hope you get better help soon x
Sweetie, your doctor is talking a crock of sh*%e!!!!! Paula Radcliffe had a bunion. You can't tell me it stopped her running.

Do not be beaten by this Curly. You're the woman who got refunds on 2 pairs of shoes! You can beat this. Just kick that dopey doc into touch and see someone who knows what they're talking about. Chin up sweetie, you will run again xxx
Thanks AM! That's an interesting article, I have another bunion on the other foot which doesn't cause problems so far, but I DO have a sore between the big toe and the next one. I showed that to this idiot doc who just said it was nothing and I'm developing "runners feet"
Like I said, a dopey doc!
What you need is the podiatrist equivalent of Lovely James the physio. Someone who's attitude isn't "you can't run," but rather is, "how can we get you to the point where you can run?" You're probably in a really good part of the country to get help. Try searching local podiatrists on line and also ask at your local running clubs if there's anyone they can recommend. It may take a while to get the right help but at least you'll feel like you're fighting back as you look. xxx
Devastating! That's not what you want to hear Surely there must be an alternative?
Oh Curly xxxx Big hug ((((( )))))
Oh I am absolutely gutted for you, you poor love , what a blow.
I agree with EM, maybe if you went to see a podiatrist, after all they specialise in feet don't they ? They might be able to offer some more constructive advice .
Oh Curly, I am so sorry , PAH !!!!! xxxx
I cannot believe that!!!My daughter runs and has a bunion on the side of her big toe where it joins the foot. She was told she could have it cut off. It's not quite that bad yet...she is not looking forward to it but it is a solution that has been offered.Bu knowing you Curlygurly you are not going to let this stop you..lots of good thoughts going your way🍀
You can relieve the pain of a bunion with a toe separator. I don't have a bunion but I sometimes get a very painful big toe, which is how I found this. Might work for you too... physioroom.com/product/Gele...
That's quite interesting actually, I don't have pain from overlapping toes, but that might hold the shoe off the painful bit..thanks for that xx
That's exactly what it does for me - stops the shoe pushing against my big toe. My toes don't overlap, but my joints complain loudly if they're at the wrong angle. I spent a whole Glastonbury with my toe wrapped in cotton wool and bandages - because of a reaction to the solid rubber of the obligatory festival wellies. When I got back home I discovered this toe separator and wore it with softer shoes until the pain went. Definitely worth a try.
Hi Curly
I agree you need to see a podiatrist. I have had bunions on both feet since I was small, even had an op which didn't help any. Luckily they have never been painful and haven't bothered me since I started running last year. I fine that having d width trainers prevents rubbing. Hope you find a solution and can get back to running ways soon.
Sorry about the bunion Curly, and it really seems your GP doesn't know much about running... I confess I had to "duckduckgo" * bunion and I've found this, maybe it can help!
runnersworld.com/health/pre...
* search engine with NO ads.... and no tracking
Maybe even a trip back to the shoeshop where you can tell them its just a bunion ? (I could imagine that they didn't want to diagnose the problem but now you know what it is, they might be able to advise suitable shoes.)
terrible advice!
What short sighted advice. You can bet he/she doesn't run. There are loads of articles online about runners with bunions but they all still run. Just get different advice. A year ago a physio asked me if I "really wanted to run" and and suggested I take up another sport and that I might just be able to run " a couple of kilometres" regularly. I'm still running and managing 10K regularly.
You'll be back CG!
Oh no. I'm so sad for you. Crappy doctor. I hope you can find someone to give you proper advice. Big hugs. Xx
AM is spot on, Curly. Find yourself a tame podiatrist, with a positive outlook on life (preferably a runner). The running clubs are the obvious place to make enquiries. You can do this. We are all looking forward to the imminent tales of dix kilometres dans la pays Francais (well I tried) so get it sorted, girl.
There was an interesting piece on Radio 4 about the "nocebo" effect, basically the opposite of placebo, where they talked about the importance of doctors addressing the concerns that you came into the surgery with, in a positive manner. Your doc obviously didn't hear it.
You'll be okay, you're a runner!!!
Wow. You would think that if someone has nothing decent to say, they would say nothing at all! Sorry about your negative experience, maybe, alongside what everyone said about seeing a podiatrist, getting a second opinion from a different doc at ur surgery might also help. Hope it all works out for you!
I hope all that wonderful advice has made you feel better. What would we do without each other!!!
RUBBISH! Well, it may be a bunion, although I thought they were on the side of your foot, not on the top, but the not running? Pah! Different doctor, or podiatrist perhaps as some helpful peeps have suggested. You will conquer this - we know you can. All the very best with getting it sorted out x
Hi curly, you are a runner, you can't just not run cos of a bunion - never heard such tosh! You've got some great advice here - you'll be back on the road in no time. When are you going back to France?
Hope it's sorted soon.
Take care xx
Thanks PA, back to France at the end of May. They have a very good medical service there, so if I get no joy here, I'll try there. I really wanted to take some shoes with me, I've never seen a running shop there, but at the very least I'm home again for a few weeks in May/June so just a small break really xx
Thanks all there are some very helpful tips here indeed! The doc I saw was a GP Registrar, I think it means she is still training. My husband said I shouldn't see her, and he was right. I think I will ask for a second opinion from a "proper" Doctor. I too thought bunions were on the side of the foot.
I had a bunion removed in 2010. Waste of time as it is still big but now foot doesn't bend. I have one on the other foot too which I WON'T be getting removed! My feet are the only part of my body I haven't had pain in since taking up running! Your doctor is an idiot. You just need a pair of running shoes which will accommodate your lumpy feet! Since the professionals are failing you at the moment why not go to a shop and just try on everything in your size and see what feels comfortable? I run in super cheap karrimors and they're great!
This is the first signal I've had since Thursday. I'm sitting in my caravan in a muddy field in Sussex. Heaven. I wondered how you were getting on!
Don't give up. You can run 10k. You just need some different shoes!
I wondered where you were! Are you with your parents? How's Steve's Dad?
We were in Chidham on the Sussex coast ... in the rain! My parents are in Chester (I need to get up there this week, health permitting). Steve's dad is ok, but with he's having trouble with his heart and the docs don't seem too sure what's going on. I am surrounded by crocks (and am indeed joining them). x
