Hello everyone.

I have not posted for a long time, but I do read the posts everyday. I graduated in the middle of August this year, I have kept up with the running three times a week and now can do 10k once a week then usually two 5k's for the other runs. I can't believe I am saying this but I love it !!!

I have signed up for the York 10K in August and I am thinking of doing the Great north run in September( plenty of time to get better. Ha ha).

I am thinking of doing the London Winter Run in February, another 10K.

The question I want to ask is to do with the fund raising, the York 10K and the Great North run I am doing through Candlelighters Childrens Cancer Charity which is very close to me as I lost my daughter in November 1999, aged six from cancer.

I feel as I can now run (which is amazing) and I myself can now help and try and give something back for all the care and love which was given to Sophie through the years of her care by Candlelighters.

For the York 10K I will ask for sponsors from friends and family, for the Great North Run I will probably do some fund raising with Janet my wife, cake baking, selling items etc.

All you runners on this website who do a lot of 5K,10K, Half Marathons and Full Marathons do you raise money for the charities every time you run? Or do you just pay the registration fees for each event ?

I think my main problem is my friends & family get sick of me asking for sponsors all the time.

Thanks for your help

And Happy Running.

John

Hi there. Me and my friend did our first 5km last Sunday and we raised over £1000 by sharing our Just giving pages on Facebook and I emailed or texted all my clients (I'm a dog walker) I've never asked for a penny off anybody before and we did it for our local hospice, which is why I think we did so well. Amazingly generous of everyone.

We are doing another run on 27 Dec for Cafod and will just pay registration as it's too soon to ask again. I think if we decide to ever do a 10km or further we will feel we can ask again but not for a while.

Good luck with your fundraising and it sounds like an amazing charity. I'm also so sorry to read you lost your little girl at such a young age.

So sorry to hear you lost your daughter at such a young age. What a great way to give back to the charity that helped you. I'm hoping to to the race for life next year. I've done it before but only walked it. I did the same as Barbara and used the justgiving page on facebook. That's the only experience I have though and there will be plenty more qualified than me who can help.

Good luck with your run and fundraising

Oh John, I'm so sorry to hear about your little girl. Running in charity races is a brilliant way to raise money. Use all the social networking sites to get people giving, not to mention this site! I know what you mean about tapping the same people all the time, but people who know and love you won't mind a bit and will realise how close your particular charity is to your heart. Make sure you telephone all your local radio stations and local newspapers with your story, as they are always glad of a good heartwarming story and are a great source of free publicity for charity events. Good luck!
